Shotgun Choice?

Me also being left handed and coming from years of bird hunting experience as well..

I went with, and recommend a Browning BPS predator. It has a 20.5" barrel, you can get mag extensions from +1 to +6 (stock form is 5 rnds) it has removable chokes, and loading/ejection is from the bottom, with the safety on top, with nice fiber optic sight. This is a great/reliable gun for left hand shooters. If you are like me, you will be much faster handling the traditional feel of a "normal" hunting shotgun, as opposed to some of the kids running pistol grips and funky stocks/LOP's. They are also on sale now at wholesale sports! $80.00 off and a $75.00 off mail in rebate, plus the gun is priced at old dollar pricing, so getting a browning BPS with todays dollar for just over $600 is unreal!

"Normal" shotguns are fine when you are starting out or that's what you already have. If you want to go and shoot and have some fun and are not too concerned about how high you place on the ladder then shoot anything you want and enjoy.
The "kids" that are running pistol grips and funky stocks/LOPs will learn very quickly that if they want to be competitive that is probably not the right equipment.
Do you already own a shotgun? Start with that one. Shoot some other peoples shotguns. If you can go to a match talk to the people shooting. They will be more than happy to lend you their wisdom.
The majority of people are running Benelli or Remington.
That being said I have seen people running just about any other shotgun made and they are still having fun.
It doesn't mean you can't run anything else. You have to input all of your factors (budget, time, practice, how serious you want to be) and go from there.

I currently run a Mossberg 930 with an 18.5" barrel for 3 gun. It took me about 250 rounds of heavy field load and a little research to get it to run reliably but it is good now. The nice thing with the mossberg is that if I want to use it for birds I can put a 28" barrel in it and I have a bird gun. If I could do it again I would buy a Remington versamax turkey for 3 gun as the barrel is marked for 3.5" and the tactical model is not. It's kind of a grey area as the law is that the gun can hold 5 of the largest shells it was designed for in the magazine.

Well... 'Some have fun.
I've seen some get very frustrated and upset at not being able to hit/knock down targets or timing out due to delays caused by malfunctions or running out of ammo due to all the make up shots they need to take.
I think for a beginner, as long as it can be choked and you are capable of reloading it in a timely manner it doesn't matter what shotgun you use.
I will go out on a limb and advise against a 14" cyl. bore mag fed pump.
Totally unsuitable. You're just wasting your match fee

I haven't shot many other semi autos but my mossberg JM pro 930 has served me well for under a grand I got it from i run guns last year and this fall shot a match with it as well as water fowl and my whitetail. I find the 24 inch barrel a good length for a do-all gun.

short barreled shotgun you say?

Does anyone know where you can get the Mossberg 500 kit below?

http://www.brownells.com/shotgun-pa...igh-capacity-shotgun-kit-8-rds-prod25124.aspx

20" barrel and 8 round mag. I currently have a 28" Mossburg duck gun and this looks like a good way to get a starter 3 gun shotgun.

I'd hazard a guess that you can get it from Brownells ;). Seriously though, you've already got a starter 3 gun shotgun, just use your 28" 500. It can hold 5 or 6 + 1 right? That will get you having some 3gun fun and if you find you want that increased capacity you can buy that kit, get a 590, or go to a semi.

It's not an 8 round magazine tube.
It's an 8 round gun, with a 7+1 capacity.

Also that barrel does not have chokes.
You will want chokes when trying to knock over steel plates with birdshot.

Sounds like my 28" which holds 5 in the mag will work than. What choke is best for 3 gun? Do guys switch them out between stages?

Lots of matches you can get away with IC. Some tougher matches/targets may warrant a LM or M choke. If I could only have one choke it would be my light modified. You are allowed to change chokes between stages though... so since we have options on a really close burner stage with all clay targets I might run a Diffusion choke (rifled to spread out the shot faster), or on a stage with a spinner I might choke up to improved modified or even full to get the spinner to go faster. It's worth having a few options if you plan to shoot a variety of matches.

Thanks for the info!

Its not just for distant/heavy steel.
Try shooting a match with tight penalty targets.

Shoot this stage with a cylinder choke and let me know how it goes!

Don't think Chokes are needed for steel. Clay birds yes. Never seen anyone have a problem with Pepper Poppers etc.

I mean this in no disrespect what so ever but I couldn't disagree more. Plates out at 25-30yds your going to want a LM at the least, Mod is better. How about a "no-shoot" plate in close proxsimertry to a "shoot" plate? I've seen lots of guys struggle with texas stars and spinners with IC guns at 20yds...
