Shotgun for 3 gun

I'm not aware of any shotgun on the Canadian market that you can buy from a regular store (not a tuner like Tac Ord) that has the proper magazine capacity for 3gun. They all require either new mag extensions, or modifying the existing extension.

Thanks for the more detailed explanation JC. I'm in the market for a 1301 so just looking to know as much as I can about them.

I have the comp model (24"). 100% flawless so far. It even shoots light target loads reliability.

The downside is it appears few modifications / parts are available for it. That said, it doesn't need much for the normal or serious users. The extreme will always do something...

I have a S&J extension on it.

FYI... Shotgun shell lengths are named for their length after firing (i.e. chamber length). Most often they are about .5" shorter in length before firing than described on the box (e.g. 2.75" shells are about 2.25" in length).

Your goal is to size your magazine and extension/limiter to hold about 5.75 x <Size of Chamber> shells. If you have a 3" chamber, you should be able to hold 6 x 2.75" shells (but not 6 x 3"). If you have a 3.5" chamber, you should be able to hold 7 x 2.75" shells (but not 6 x 3.5").

That way you are never exceeding the 5 x <Size of Chamber> magazine limit for semi's, because the 6th chamber-size shell won't fit in the magazine. Make sense?

Bottom line, if you want to max things out, you'll need an extension. Whichever way you go (tricked out VersaMax or NC extensions), Casey at TacOrd is great to deal with.

What you've stated makes sense. What doesn't is the varied OAL of various loaded shotgun rounds. I have some 2.75" shells that measure 2 1/4" and some that are up to 2 1/2" OAL. 3" shells vary too. I suppose I could size the mag tube to 5.x of the longest 3" shells I can find and just keep 6 of those samples with the gun.
Seems slightly ridiculous, but such is life.

The 1301 Comp models already comes with the extended bolt release and bolt handle, the Carrier and Loading Port were the only 2 that Casey moded. and the mag extension too.

So I was playing around with my 1301 Comp today and checked the capacity without the inner mag spring retaining unit. If you take this out and put it back together it will hold 5 x 3" shells and 5 x 2 3/4" shells. With it still installed it only holds 4 x 3" shells but 5 x 2 3/4" shells.

I also purchased a +1 mag extension from SJ Hardware as he has them on sale right now and I was very pleased to find that with it installed the 1301 will hold 5 x 3" shells but 6 x 2 3/4" shells. This is without any type of insert to limit capacity like I needed to do with the Nordic +2 I purchased from Casey. The only downside, the Nordic Component extension just looks cooler. I plan to stick with the SJ Hardware +1 for now though, it is steel instead of aluminum and doesn't require a clamp (which I like) but both are quality products. I have had a SJ +2 on my Mossberg 590A1 for years now and it is first rate and solid.

If anyone is interested in the SJ +1 ext (which is still on sale at the time of writing this) here is a link: http://www.sjhardware.com/product-p/benelli-nova-1.htm

The Nordic extension doesn't require an clamp. I know many people think it does, but it works just fine with no clamp. I run my +8 extension in the States, holding 12 shells in the tube, with no clamp.

Yeah, I know. I can see how you thought I was stating that but I just meant the SJ doesn't. Thanks for clarifying.

Depends where. I think at WRAS it only stipulated that if you had an optic on your shotgun you'd be in open. In any case I just do it for fun.

I ran plenty of matches with my 590. And scored pretty darn well.

Well I just sent in a new Versamax Sportsman to Casey at TacOrd ...Getting the "Full Meal Deal " . lol
Barrel cut to 23 inches , 2 extended chokes, larger bolt release and cocking handle, match saver installed , receiver milled out etc .
I went with the uber cool coated bolt so it should look just like the one in the above pics as well but didn't get the larger safety. The stock one looks big enough to me.

Carbon deposits from what I can tell.

Humm, I took my 1301 out for the first time today to test her out. I shot a box of 00 buckshot and 6 slugs to see how it patterned/shot and noticed as I was packing it away, the end cap of my extension had the usual carbon as I expected but also had some lead dusting which didn't wipe off. Reading on another forum, someone mentioned it's to be expected and that it was vapourized lead from shooting slugs. I could only find one mention of this but just figured I'd check with the guys here and see.
