I never had that problem.... Sounds like the recoil spring might need to be replaced.... If he is running light loads, he may need a lighter spring.
Unintuitively, I had a similar FTE problem on my m2 with low recoil slugs, they didn't recharger they just jammed up once in a while... and it ended up being the lifter spring
