Ok gang, it is again coming to that time of the year September for most parts of BC deer season opens. Alot of Vancouver Island is open to deer using ONLY Buckshot 00 or 000 in a 20 Guage or larger gun. My question is this ,What barrel is better suited for buckshot a 24" Cylinder bore barrel or a 30" full choke barrel? Remember this is only buckshot I would rather use a slug but we do not have that option so any help on what has worked best for buckshot would be appreciated.

Thanks

depends on the range. I'd use the 30" full choke, just for extra reach. If you're inside 75m, use the 24", cuts down on weight and bulk

You will get two consistent views likely.

The full choke guys and the mod and imp cyl guys.

We always used 30" full choke with 00B with really good results. This is some years ago.

Now some fellows are sayig full choke is no good, poddibly due to the new rounds? Not sure about that.

Testing would be the best way to determine your answer. Do you own or know a couple guys with different barrels to try it?

I agree. Pattern your individual gun. Bottom line is you want the tightest pattern with Buck that you can get. Some guns do that with Full, some with modified. Different ammo is another variable.

If you can find it, pick up some of the Federal Flight Control Buckshot.......I have some on order from my local gun shop, but apparently, the shot doesn't leave the shot cup until 20 yards out or so! I imagine it would work better with a more open choke.......YMMV.....and as always, pattern "YOUR" gun, all guns throw shot differently!

Buckshot is unreliable past 30 or so yards. Mind you, it's usually used out of open chokes. A full choke will change that.
Definitely pattern your shotgun. You have to know how big the pattern is at assorted ranges and where the POI is out of your shotgun. It's just like sighting in a rifle or a slug.

Without starting a new thread.
I’m curious about firing 00b through a full choke.
I’m under the assumption that old timers used whatever shotgun they had. Bird. Buck. Slugs. Didn’t matter.

I’m curious now (I’ve been googling. And getting alot of mixed reviews. Mostly no)

Is it safe to shoot 00b through a fixed full choke barrel ?

What about slugs ?

Thanks.

Dave

My understanding is that a full choke is fine for slugs and Buckshot, but you shouldn't shoot them through anything tighter.

Steel shot is not safe for full chokes. Improved modified is your limit there, and depending on who you ask that might be too tight.

After 14 years not much has changed when it comes to shooting buckshot. ;)

I've shot buckshot through full chokes without an issue however in my gun I get more consistent patterns with 00 and 000 buck using a modified choke. This is why it's important to pattern your gun.

I use slugs instead of buckshot for the Ontario controlled hunts. If I couldn't use slugs I'd use 3" 000 buck and keep my shots within 30 yards.

Old timers used 00B for deer. In bush at close range. Full choke is good. I used 00 in a 10 SXS full and full. Killed deer well at 50 or so. All of this is mute if you don’t pattern your gun! I also found on a sxs 12 that adding a turkey rear sight helped.

my search litteraly brought up 1 thread and this was it. Sorry I didn’t work up to your standards. Or start another thread.
Sh!t if I did that you’d be reaming me about using the search function I’m sure

Thanks for your help though
I was gunna give you props for searching! Hahaha.

Like everyone else said, pattern your gun, try different loads and sizes of buckshot and use whatever shoots best. Those island blacktail can be squirrely but they aren't exactly sturdy, whatever you can get to shoot the tightest group will work great.

Worst case you can also try out the art of cut shells.

I've used a 12 G pump with 28" barrel with buckshot. Range is limited. Works good inside 50 yards. At 30 yards most pellets will hit the deer and bring it down. Be prepared for a follow-up shot.
