Shotgun only deer hunters?

And recently I bought a Mossberg 500 20 gauge off a fellow CGN and could'nt resist the offer from SIR which is a 22" fully rifled cantilever ported bbl & Bushnell scope combo, regularly $196.97 on clearance for $156.97,(there's only one left)

I saw it last time I was in SIR. I was excited until I relized it was 20 guage ( I don't have one). It's a sweet looking setup though.

So having said that, I'll need to do some range testing with different sabot/slugs. Anyone have a suggestion?

I use (12 guage) 3 inch 1 oz Federal sabot slugs. They are a copper slug with a hollow point. I have hit a 12 inch diameter plate at 200 yards. I certainly can't do that on every shot but I can hit it. I'm a big fan of the sabot slugs - but they're expensive...

Just out of curiosity, yesterday I tested my Browning Auto 5 3" Magnum 31 1/2" fulll choked waterfowl gun with Winchester copper plated buckshot, 10 pellets per shell. Shot at 50 measured yards on the range. Best pattern had 7 pellets in a 9" circle, 8 in a foot, centred on the point of aim. That was the best, but all shots produced usable patterns at that range. I think I just got lucky with the gun/ammunition combination. Never been a fan of buckshot, prefer a rifle, and I hunt in a rifle area, but there is a stretch of thick brush along the river, in addition to a cedar swamp, and the shotgun would certainly be an option there.

I was visiting Winnipeg last wknd and went outta my way to visit SIR and I too noticed the combo set under the glass....then noticed it was 20 gauge
I did'nt have a 20 gauge either then one popped up in the Shotgun Exchange.

I still can't beleive you would turn down a trade for a new Marlin 336SC in 219 Zipper or a Marlin 1894CL in 218 Bee plus cash for your old 12 gauge.

The Gold Fusion is, of course, backbored. This does not spell good accuracy for slugs which, of course, are typically much smaller in diameter than a standard bore diamater of .729" (backboring is larger in diameter, typically .735 or more).

Having said that, I have shot rifled slugs in my Fusion accurately enough to kill a coyote at 100 yards. It was a Hail Mary shot though.

The effectiveness of the combination of the Fusion and a rifled tube with sabots will depend on velocity. Don't expect good results with a very fast (copper solid or partition gold) sabot with only 5" of rifling. If you use a slower sabot (like a BRI) you might get acceptable groups inside 75 yards, but that's a stretch.

Definitely better to test things out before you go hunting. In my estimation and experience, don't count on being amazed with the accuracy with your setup unfortunately

My older 20 gauge Ithaca Deerslayer M37, mounting an M87 20 inch fully rifled barrel, really shot well with Winchester brand Nosler Partition Golds Sabots 2 3/4. Second place in accuracy but with only slightly less recoil/velocity were the Winchester Platinum Sabots.

Using iron sights I had two inch groups at 35 and 75 yards, from a rest mind you, using the golds.
PS I really needed a recoil pad that day....and this ammunition is not cheap by any means.

My son got his first deer today with my cut down Baikal over under shooting 0 buck. (12 pellets) All the practicing he did on rabbits this summer must have helped. One shot at 40 yards, steaks in the freezer.
