I am looking to buy a new shotgun. I am thinking either pump or auto with synthetic furniture. All recommendations greatly appreciated.

Norinco 870 clones are good and for a good price, pick one up at Marstar.
Remington genuine 870's are even better, but a bit more pricey. (pumps)
Mossberg 500's and 590's are very reliable, and tough as hell. (pumps)
Fabarms also make very nice reliable shotties.

Remington 1100's, and 1187's are good semis. Mossy 930's and 935's are also both good semi's.
Benelli cordoba is a very nice semi shotgun, black synthetic to. Benelli m4 is a beautiful pump action.

You could always wait for Dlask to pump out some of their new super shorty 12 gauges.
They are 870 pump actions, black synthetic, pistol grip, and 8.5 inch or 6.5 inch barrels.... NON RESTRICTED!.

Out of all the shotguns mentioned for a general all around good shotgun I would buy a genuine rem 870. They are very reliable, and have tonnes upon tonnes of aftermarket parts and accessories. You cant really go wrong with it.

What will you be using it for primarily? Answer that and it should help you narrow down your choices.

In a pump I would go with a Rem. 870. In a semi the Benelli is hard to beat.

Pump is not very friendly for trap and skeet. long term success is going to be more difficult than with O/U or semi.

BTW, Browning BPS stalker with 12 gauge, 3-1/2 chamber is on 75 MIR now. nice bottom eject function if you really looking for a pump.

Trap, skeet and some hunting.

How much do you want to spend? The best value in a new gun is the Remington 870 Express although as noted the pump gun makes skeet a little more challenging.

If you are considering an autoloader with clay targets as your primary activity then a Beretta 391, Browning Gold or a Remington 11/87 would be the top three choices.

I went with an 11-87 for a multi purpose gun, for the ease of finding accessories. Slug barrels, mounts, etc. are easy to find and reasonably cheap. Try to find a slug barrel for a beretta or browning.for less than $500.

Depending upon your price range I would make the following recommendations.

Primarily Hunting: Rem 870 in a 3.5 is more gun than you'll ever need for that purpose. Good for duck, goose, turkey, and you can buy a rifled slug barrel and have some fun with some bigger game.

Primarily Sport: This type of shooting is best suited for an Over/Under. These guns are generally pricey but you could buy a less expensive Baikal or Stoeger ($600) which seem to be pretty tough and can be had in removable chokes. But if you want to spend the money ($2000 plus) try a Beretta, or maybe a Ruger Red Label and you will be very happy with the results.

I was in your shoes not long ago and decided to buy a used Marocchi Over/Under for a good price. Buying a used shotgun can be rather affordable if you know what you are looking at, but I woul recommend buying a more common gun like a Beretta, Win, Ruger, and even a Browning maybe. This way people will be able to give you advice on the gun, you will be able to buy chokes easily and also upgrade a little if need be.

I have hunted with my Over/Under and would recommend it for anything but slugs. You get 2 shots but they come fast and there quick to reload.

Just my 2 cents.

Try and find yourself a Beretta 1201fp, same basic shotgun as the Benelli but less then half the price. Most benelli accessories fit it as well!

The hunting I am thinking about would be for seabirds which means an open boat and salt spray. Perhaps stainless steel would be the way to go. It seems that the auto would be the way to as it would be more versatile.

I beg to differ. There's nothing wrong with a pump gun for trap or skeet. Mod. 12 Win. and Mod. 31 Rem. ruled the trap and skeet ranges for a long time. Not everyone shoots an O/U well. And to buy a single purpose trap or skeet O/U is a very expensive proposition. And is not a gun to be taken in the field.

Winchester 1897! :dancingbanana:

If I had to buy something made in the last couple decades though....one of those Rem 870's with the mag tube that sticks out a little farther than the dickie do (I mean barrel)

Goin' turr huntin' ... a synthetic stocked 870 Express and keep the external
metal well oiled. Beat the hell out of them and they still work. Gun of choice
for those living on James Bay/Hudson Bay coast who hunt to eat.

Save your coin for a good clay target gun (like a Beretta auto-loader) and DON'T ever take it hunting out on the salt.

I see Beretta has a model that is supposed to be resistant to moisture including Salt spary. I saw it at S.I.R. website. Looks damn good too.

Lots of guns will do what you want to do. Head to a well-stocked gun store and handle them all, go to the trap club and see what people are shooting and ask if you can test drive it. Look for an 'open house' shoot, or some other non-competitive shoot where you'll have guys bring out their hunting guns, rather than the Perazzis.
