Shotgun red dot: RMR vs Aimpoint style?

The circle dot reticles work well for shotguns.... "donut of death"

That it does hahaha

On the underside of an Aimpoint Micro (and clones with the same footprint) there are 4 screws, and a little square slot that interface with its mount, whether the Aimpoint factory one or any other.

If you want to cowitness irons, CROM smiles on us haha. Only game in town, but if you don't care about the irons as much there are options for half the price, like our own domestically made S&J Hardware versions. The two on the left are for Aimpoints, the two on the right for RMR style

Talley makes a very simple RMR mount as well, but I'd rather buy Canadian if possible.

Oh damn. I was just thinking about how my shotgun could use a red dot for next years spring turkey season, and I was thinking about trying the Olight reflex sight... Never realized people were making these nifty little mounting plates though! I thought I'd have to use a pic rail and adapter.

Thanks Joel, definitely gonna have to give these a look. Have you seen the Talley one for sale in Canada yet? I don't need one with a rear sight, so that or the S&J models would fit the bill nicely for me...

I think that more important than the type of sight is the reticle in the sight. A great big dot in a tube scope will beat a 1 minute dot in a reflex sight every time. A six minute dot seems silly, but with a shotgun, you're going to be shooting minute of 6 inch plate at 100 using slugs anyway. In closer, the big dot, or better, a circle dot will be many times quicker for most people.

Holosun 510C reticle FTW. Zero the dot for slugs, and the 65MOA circle approximates your shot pattern.

I tried a HE510C-GR on my 1301 tactical and found it sits a bit too high for my liking
guess that's why everyone goes with the 507 and the low profile mount

Not that I have seen yet, sorry! But this is based on only a quick Google search....not the most thorough. Happy you've got some better options now though!

Definitely prefer the sight picture of reflex sights, and their small size

Really wanting to try and enclosed reflex sight on something
Man you will like it! I grabbed a new Mossberg 940 pro Turkey 18.5” with the rmsc shield cut out and put a Holosun eps on it. I chose it over the 407/507c for two reasons, 1 it’s enclosed but 2 also slightly lower deck height. And man it’s got fov for days being closer to your face like that but also astigs less like not even there for me on this one. I went green and I love the 32 moa circle only reticle, which is 16 at 50 and 8” at 25 yards. Was easy to shoot near ragged hole groups at 40 yards with challenger slugs that way and Carlson extended IC choke.

I would not hesitate to run this for any bird situation, exact same site and reticle.

I had my first one come with no gas ports in barrel, the must have been in a hurry to get em out the door so sent for new barrel and bought another one and set it up. The first one is back with new barrel so if anyone in market...I know a guy. ;)

I liked that eps so much that if I did a rifle set up again that’s what I would go for and on rear base and would be worth machinist to get me to pic rail or whatever if I couldn’t find easy way to get it on the rifle. I do believe there is a rmsc shield to picatinny adapter out there so that’s likely how I’d go. Would be good on a qd set up as back up to a qd scoped rifle also, could have it pre sighted in and in the pack as back up.

Battery optional, solar, 3 reticles, manual brightness adjust or full auto shake awake defence modes. I like manual mode. Top of the line imo.

A rail with a vortex Rmr works quite well as vortex included the rail adapter on the venom models.

I really like the reflex far back on the receiver like a traditional receiver sight

Green is an absolute gamechanger vs red for those of us with astigmatism
I tried the green holosun 507c and I found it made my astigmatism worse. I went back to red which is nearly perfect. Weird.

I think the red/green thing is more of a color cone issue and how our eyes pick up colors..... I'm a bit color blind in the green area but it's pretty mild.

Hey glad to hear that, gun internet has more disinformation than the normal internet (terrifying) and I'd hate to contribute to that

Probably shouldn't base my amateur optometry findings on a sample size of two, especially when those people are both from Alberta

I've found green the worst for my eyes. Dots look like stars and the green circles seem to pulsate in my vision. Red is much better. Blue is by far the best. I just put a blue illuminated optic on my crossbow and it's great.
I've been toying with the idea of another 1301 setup as a dedicated turkey and coyote rig. It's interesting to see what ppl run. I have a Walther reddot on my Stevens 301 turkey 410 and it's great but it leaves me with a chin weld but the bead is visible thru the rail

I have a Mossberg 590a1 and have tried a few different styles including An eotech and my buddies trijicon ( just for s&g ) haven’t tried an aimpoint style but 3 different rmr styles and finally settled on the apex atom with cover. You can get the rmr/picatinny mount from them for 35$ I love it! But that is personal preference.

Anyone seen this yet, Vang Comp has been doing a barrel mounted set up. Would be nice to keep the receiver clear of things, I prefer a barrel mounted rifle sight set up and this would be a nice way to keep it barrel specific.
