Should I be wary of this deal?

Glad to hear you caught it and didn't give him money!
I once saw an ad that said something to the effect of "BNIB CZ75 with 2 'clips', 400"
0 trader rating, raised my eyebrow.
It's a good thing these scammers are so desperate for a quick sale or they'd be a bit tougher to spot!

Trader rating sounds so important now
How would I buy or sell something

Anyone will sell you stuff. If you want to sell something you may need to either send it first (and then YOU better trust the guy your sending it to) or offer some form of phone confirmation with a home address, if your listed and you pick up the phone when they call then that is all the info a police investigation would need to follow up. It is still very do-able. We all started at 0 :)

Having a post history if you have a low trader rating helps.

At least it shows that you are around.

I tend to avoid low trader rating/low post count combos.

But a high trader rating (legit and protracted) with low post count, or high post count lower trader rating doesn't usually cause me too much concern.

Send it first , Ain't going to happen
Lived this long with no trader rating (and bought stuff on EE)I can live with out it
If you want to buy any guns from me it will be face to face
Starting out with a phone conversation is always a good start

It just seems with out a trader rating those with one recommend avoiding them without like the plague

Where was the seller based out of? A number of handguns including a few glocks were stolen from Jo Brooke firearms in Brandon. If he's near the Brandon/Winnipeg area in Manitoba I would definitely inform the rcmp as this could be a matter if public safety. I know it sounds a little crazy but better safe than sorry.

It sounds more like a scam than the sales of stolen guns... Specially for $495... Usualy stolen guns get sold off to street buyers who will pay almost double the retail... Then these guns are the ones you will read about in the paper in gang shootings.. Which we all know will eventually bring a ban our "priviledge" to own guns :(
