Should I leave this grouse for next year?

Should I let Mr. Wiley Grouse be?

If you have not been following the other thread about Mr. Wiley Grouse, here's the story:

I have taken 3 grouse out of a pine/poplar patch recently.
One got away, and I went back to find him on three later occasions. He has flushed a couple of times, but no shot was taken, as the cover was too thick, or my partner was on that side.
The last time I did not find him.

He's a tricky one, and I'm having some fun going after him - but I've also been suprised at the number of CGN'ers and hunters that have something to say about it!

A lot of people have pm'd me to say "pass and let him breed" , or "go finish the job". Might as well make it a formal Poll.

What say you?

A fine sporting gentleman would not feel defeated if he let this grouse pass, for with enough time and effort the bird would inevitably end up in the pot. It would, instead, be a victory for the hunter because it would display his appreciation and gratitude for his quarry on a much higher level. Let him go I say. You've made him work very hard for his life, and in turn you will remember him for much longer han any other grouse you have, or will kill.

Any birs that can elude you on mor than two occasion should have your admiration and respect. Think of the fun you and future hunters will have when it comes time to hunt his /her progeny. Let it be Man

I agree with 1899. Damn well said.

We hunters are nothing without our memories and stories. The stories that quickly get boring are the ones about about how many, how big and how far the shot was.

But the story about the wiley one that got away is usually a better story than all the others. Just like the trophy gets bigger and heavier with each passing year, the one that got away gets craftier and smarter with each telling because a hunting story worth telling is one worth embellishing.

Shoot that grouse now and you'll have is dinner. Let him live and you'll have a story you can dine out on for years. And in future seasons when you're out done by a grouse, it will remind you of the one that got away back in 2005.

I say let him live... you can take it one step further and ensure his survival by feeding him all winter... camp out and shoot all the foxes and chase the hawks away too.
I think that it would not be out of line to build a shrine to this Grouse God and worship him by making sacrifices on the altar.
I can just see the headlines now... RCMP INVESTIGATE GROWING GROUSE CULT :!:
The self styled religous leader of the Gouse God Clan who uses the code-name "popcan" is suspected of having terrorist ties to Osama Bin Laden say police.

BUT, one day he is going to step out on the edge of the road for a bit of gravel, and some other "hunter" is going to ground sluice him!

I don't want that to happen either! It would not be a fitting end to the story.

He should get clean away or go down gloriously on the wing! With that in mind, what's the number for the witness re-location people? maybe they can give him a disguise and new ID, in another patch of woods?

But that is not the point. It is the relationship between YOU and the bird that matters.

Well, I've already reconciled my relationship with this one. I have one more opportunity to drop by his house before Thanksgiving ... after that, he and I are done. 8)

However, as I mentioned before, I might drop by (without a shotgun) from time to time just to keep him sharp.

ummm, we are talking about a grouse right? Uhhh, you couldn't do a tenth the damage to a grouse gene pool or population as could 1 respectible bobcat, lynx, or fisher. Do whatever you feel like doing, make a statue out of play-do to honor the bird if ya like or eat him with a corn flake batter.

I was going to say still hunt the son of a ##### and snipe him with a .22 :D But then BIGREDD ponders:

and I am reminded we are a diverse community and sometimes its best to listen to others and think things through.
