Shoulder sling rifle carry - muzzle down?

I'm surprised at people putting tape over the muzzle, too. Anything that restricts or blocks the muzzle can result in barrel rupture and banana peel. Not good!

Thousands of hunters carry their firearms with a layer of tape over the muzzle. None of them have experienced a barrel rupture because of the tape. Accuracy has not been affected either. Thousands of us can recommend the procedure. The tape blows away long before the bullet gets there and the strength of the tape is so weak there is no obstruction, no barrel rupture, no problem.

Muzzle up for me... tried the muzzle down but the buttstock doesn't hang on my shoulder comfortably compared the the forend.

You've all got it wrong:) Safari Sling from Boonie Packer Products. The only way to carry a hunting rifle IMHO. And +1 for the tape, just make sure you take it off at the end of the hunt each day as it can hold condensation and moisture in your barrel.

Will POI change if the muzzle is taped?

Muzzle down weak side

Muzzle taped

Never had any problems with light taping on muzzle, never ever heard of problems from people doing it

I learned about tape over the muzzle about 15 yrs. ago @ an Outfitters Camp , where he insisted that all do it.
It was a common practice for years @ that camp ,,,,,,,,, no problems .
As others have said ,,,,,,,,,, carrying the rifle muzzle down on the LEFT side for right handed shooters is the fastest
way to put the gun into battery . I learned that years ago from a book ,,,,, " How to be a Crack Shot" by Claude
Parmellee , copyright 1950.

If I might need to shoulder my rifle quickly I sling it muzzle down on my weak side ie. African carry.

Electrical tape over the muzzle and a couple of extra wraps on the barrel. You can shoot right through the tape, no harm, no foul.

Fellow gunnutz;
Good evening to you all, hopefully the week has been treating you in an acceptable manner thus far.

As geologist notes above, there is no downside to electrical tape that we've been able to discover after nearly two decades of use.

For the curious, we have done accuracy testing firing through tape and there's no discernible difference in a hunting rifle that we've been able to detect.

One last thing since we're on the subject of tape - we've found that if one uses blue, green or yellow tape on a bolt rifle, one is still able to remove the bolt, hold the muzzle up to a light source and check for obstructions with the tape in place. If you insist on black then that's not possible.

We've been running blue mostly, because it's sorta stylish. ;)

Dang, great little tip! Cheers!

Muzzle down, "African Carry" - mostly because that's how I got told to carry by my dad and uncles ages ago. Makes for a quick transition to the shoulder once you get the hang of it.

Notable exception: Parade carry if you have dogs with you. Impossible to avoid muzzle sweeping the dogs if you're using African Carry - the dogs always want to circle around your legs every now and then.

Not too darn many that I've ever seen. I'm surprised at people putting tape over the muzzle, too. Anything that restricts or blocks the muzzle can result in barrel rupture and banana peel. Not good!

Tape over the end of the muzzle will NEVER do any harm. It ruptures before the bullet even gets there, causing no issues at all.
However, anything inside the muzzle will cause serious issues, such as you describe.

I have been taping the muzzles of my hunting rifles for 40+ years, with no problems whatsoever. Dave.

Not to dispute the point made by several experienced hunters here. However, if we put a piece of strong sticky duct tape around the muzzle, it may cause problem. It is a different story if we put a painter's masking tape.

Some qualifications are needed for green light muzzle-taping.

Sorry but you are totally wrong. How would a piece of duct tape placed over the muzzle cause a problem? The compressed air from the bullet travelling down the barrel blows the tape apart long before the bullet even arrives. Read and learn http://www.rifleshootermag.com/accuracy-tests/fact-fiction-tale-tape/

I don't know of any tape that when placed on the outside of the barrel will not be blown away before the bullet gets there... it's a different story if you wad it up and jam it in the bore...

This thread should end soon...

Ok, I'm wrong. I'm glad I am wrong.
Will tape my rifle this spring. It has been a pain to PROVE my rifle twenty time a day, sometimes when a bear was walking in front of me.
