Well in all honesty I don't have much experience with bolt gun hunting. It was 4 deer in 3 season, it's like driving a mini cooper downtown Toronto compare to driving a f-350 4 doors long box downtown; sometimes it doesn't make much difference others its a world apparte like mounting and dismounting a vehicle, walking in the bush. Also a big difference is in aiming, last hunting season I was out of shape and I found that hunting with a mini 14 after 30 seconds aiming down the scope my aim was all around compare to wen I was hunting with my rfb I basically had unlimited aim time as the weight is so close to the body.
On the semi auto side, well its all a question of philosophy . How much do you value a second and third shot? Do you hunt in a stand were you get clear shot and you rarely miss? Or do you walk the woods and sometimes stir up a deer that takes of running? Do you value the opportunity to harvest a deer while you are driving to or from your hunting spot?
The last deer I took we were driving back from the hunt on the first day and it was 5 minutes before case time, we stop to case the guns. As I wasn't driving I case my rfb, left it on the top of the other rifle and let the mag on the dash. We drove about 75 meters and after a turn there was a deer that cross the road, my dad stop and urge me to grab my gun. The young buck stop on the top of a hill in a clearing, it didn't take 15 seconds I was aiming at him. but it was almost dark, good thing I had my burris e1 as it was gathering more light then my eyes, I shot him and he fell down. After 2 second I lowered the gun then a total of 5 second after he fell down he got up and ran (jump) away. Wen he landed from his second jump I shot and missed but wen he jumped for the third time I caught him just a little bit back of the lunges area. We found him 30 minutes later with flashlights about 50 meters away. Turns out wen I first shot him I broke one of his rear legs as he was ether stairing at us or was walking away from us.
Lets just say if I was hunting with a bolt action there is no way in hell I would have ben able to ketch that deer!
