And I like a good Sonnet too..... 'how do I love thee, let me count the ways'..... :p

NAA.

Nothing beats the looks of those wood grips, but i have to say they are not fun to shoot with , hurts my middle finger as it rests just under the trigger guard, and with the recoil gets jammed. I have to hold a lower grip because of it. The grip on the stainless is much easier too shoot.

I've posted these photos previously;), but here's a couple of my favorite 44. A 4" S&W model 29 'with' factory S&W ivory.

And another of the same with a couple of books by the man primarily responsible for bringing the caliber into existence. Also, included, a recently purchased replica of the holster he used.

I need a moment to myself...

S&W 44s

What a great tread !! I'll introduce 2 small fellows of mine & keep the big ones for later...

Snub Model 29, not too many of these around...

DSC_0003.jpg

Next is my favorite 44, a Model 624 in .44 S&W Special cal. Simply superb balance & handling !! Plus long range accuracy...

Not shown is a 4 inch 29 & a 1958 vintage 6 1/2 (my 200 yds piece)

Johnn, beautifull holster you have there !! Maker ?? Thanks for bringing up THE man responsible for the popularity of the 44 Calibers. Keith has always been my main influence in handguns and is responsible for my interest in long range hangunning. It was a long road for me to duplicate his 44 S&W Spl loadings but I made it...have since backed down...Mk

Nice guns, I wish I could own a gun like that. Elmer keith is the reason such beautiful guns exist.

The holster is made by Milt Sparks holster although the model they make of it today has a covered trigger area.

I've posted this elsewhere but in the mid 70's I visited Elmer for a day at his home in Salmon Idaho and had him pose for a picture by my truck as we were getting ready to leave.

I sent this picture to Milt Sparks and asked if they'd make me a copy, as in the photo which they did:D.

I really like the 624; the tapered "pencil" barrels are nice. Are those Herrett's Roper grips on it? If so, I have the same ones on my K-38.

.41 Magnum

Little brother to my S&W Model 29 .44 Mag, this really nice 6" Model 57 in .41 Magnum [with MD Charlton custom tune]

Again, I prefer Pachmayr grippers on my wheelguns for shooting:

tjhaile,

Good call !! Yes they are Herrets Roper designed grips. Excellent pointability but can be painfull with heavy loads.

Johnn

Thanks for the info on the Sparks holster. You are a very lucky man !! To have spent a day with Elmer Keith must have been quite a great experience !! Nice photo, very nice !!

You're welcome for the holster info. Thinking back, it's surprising how fast the years have slipped by. My interest in handguns and handguns started in the early 60's and the day spent visiting Elmer Kieth is definately the high point of those years. The first evening after the visit, we camped in a gravel pit and after supper I spent a bit of time reading my copy of Six Guns by Keith. It was amazing to note but the book was written just like he actually talked.

:)Your mention of "Herrett's Roper" grips brought back memories of the next stop on the trip, following the visit with Elmer. We swung through Twin Falls Idaho and stopped in at Herrett's where after a quick tour, I bought two sets of grips. A set of target stocks for my S&W model 41 and a set of Jordan Trooper stocks for the N-frame S&W. The Jordan Troopers I never did use after I 'lucked out', purchased and put the S&W factory ivory grips on my 4" 29. I did however, fill in and adapt the Troopers and have used them to try and 'tame' the recoil of the 500 S&W.

This is the only "smokeless" revolver that I have (repost) a Ruger Single Six old model.

All the rest are black powder smokers:(repost)
