Why did they stop making these???????

Cost of hand building a gun, all the old guys that knew what they where doing retired, My theory any way, and at that time Colt was not interested in civilian shooter, they where going after Gov't contracts.
BTW any one that puts a royal blue in a holster will regret it., Buy a Smith or Ruger, or a new colt.
Bigi, That one from Ward's? Had a 4 in that same time frame, back in the old days .

Not a true complete snake but I think it’s still relevant to this thread.

A nice Couger Magnum, a stainless Ruger Security Six .357 frame mated to a cut down 8” (It's now a confirmed true 6") brushed stainless Colt Python .357 barrel. I hope to find out if it’s from Bill Davis Custom Shop who used to be the best at building both Smolt and Couger revolvers, it sure looks like it was made by a talented smith.

I used to own a Smolt / Smython back in the day and always regretted selling it. The Couger is somewhat scarcer so I’m a happy camper.

You got that one! Damn you Harry!

You got that one! Damn you Harry!

No hard feelings, same happened to me when a 3-5-7 slipped under my nose before I could PM an I’ll take it about 2 years ago. I was a bit bummed but glad to know it went to a place it would be enjoyed as much as I would have enjoyed it myself.

Now, if this one shoots as good as it looks, it’ll give my ‘57 Python a well deserved rest from being my main.38-.357 shooter after tens of thousands rounds (plus probably another few tens of thousands rounds before I got it) from wadcutters to full house magnums without a single hiccup.

After some research I found out that the barrel of the Couger is a true 6” and not a cut down 8” since the revolver was built before Colt introduced the stainless steel finish 8” barrel length in 1989.

Just got the Cougar before lunch today and after a complete disassembly and full cleaning job (it was already very clean when I got it) I'm honestly stunned by how well it was put together & the obvious custom trigger job it got. I tested it against my '57 Python and very early low 3 digits 3-5-7. Here are the average number for 10 pulls in both DA and SA.

1954 3-5-7 avg. DA: 9.6# SA: 3.3#
1957 Python avg. DA: 8.9# SA: 3.1#
Cougar/Rython avg. DA: 8.3# SA: 2.6#

The new step brother followed by a few family pictures...

That sounds like a great trigger on it Harry. You got a smoking deal on that one for sure, I'm envious....look forward to your range report.

Thanks TC. Although I've tuned the '57 Python trigger a bit and eliminated most of the DA pull stacking there is still a tiny bit of it left. On the Cougar, absolutely none. I've compared with some of my pre-war & post war 5 screws S&W's, the Cougar has the better trigger, it's quite impressive. I just hope that it's as accurate as it is built and tuned...

I think I was also very close on this gun but you beat me to it!

Bill Davis built some great guns. However, the best revolver action I have ever tried was also on a Ruger, but it was a Service Six built to a PPC gun by Ron Power. The owner of the gun was a Kansas City MO PD officer and dept. armourer who worked for Ron Power on the side doing action jobs, mostly on S&W guns. But he really liked the Ruger action and he and Ron built a great PPC gun for him with one of those. Ron did most of the metal work. I tried to buy it from this fellow when he was in Winnipeg for the CPCA PPC nationals back in the early 1990's as he was building a new gun on a GP100 action. We made a deal but could not figure out how to keep the gun in Canada after he went back home to the US.

When did Colt go to the red insert front sight ala S&W?

Colt started using the red ramp front sight from 1981 till 1985 but the all black front sight was still available till they were out of them in ~1985. They moved to the orange ramp front sight in 1986 till the end of production.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but where is the best place to look for finding Colt Python parts in Canada (specifically barrels)? My father had a 1965 model that is prohibited due to its 102mm barrel length meaning I can't inherit it as-is, and I don't think the local gunsmith seems to be having much luck with getting its status changed either. I'd hate to have it deactivated since its such a beautiful revolver.
