Hey all,
I have been thinking about this for quite a while : Why do you guys build your SHTF guns on the AR platform ? Why .223 ?? Not critizing, just curious.

I'd do some reading on actual scenarios first before deciding on a platform. I predict that running around with an AR-15 in a SHTF situation will get you noticed quickly and get you disarmed and locked up, specifically in urban areas. Look up Argentina and Katrina and see what's what. I think the key element (for me) is concealability, ruggedness and intimidation factor = 12ga. Ammo availability is not a big a factor as they would predict (i.e. sticking with NATO calibers) unless you plan on shooting everything that moves, causing another SHTF scenario on the side for other innocent folks. IMHO, the AR-15 fits in a WW3 scenario better than SHTF, how ever ridiculous that may sound. Heres hoping we never have to find out the answer.

All in all, I'd rather buy guns for the range.

for the same reason thoses systeme where retiered in the millitary... too heay, not enought ammo by battle load, controlability in rapid fire, etc, etc

the only pepole still using 7.62X39 or AK are poor rebel group that wich they could get AR

the M14 is a battle rifle that whent the way of the dodo on the batelfield except for a specialised role like the DMR rifle in the US but even thoses are retiered now to be replace by special marksman AR like the SPR

There was a guy on AR15 who went through Argentina's economic crash. His little right up is THE guide to surviving a realistic SHTF scenario. Why? Because he did.

One of his big points was that all the guys talking about AR15's being the go to gun are planning for the wrong thing. As he said, "You're not just going to wake up one day and everything has changed." It will be gradual. Would you be able to go to work now with a rifle on your back? Basically, a handgun is a must in the city because it is concealable. A rifle is for protecting your home.

That being said, if we are talking the mother of all SHTF, then the AR15 is a good choice because it is compatible with what the military is using. Easier to scavenge bodies for ammo and parts if you are using the same rifle. Plus the odd raid on supply convoys can be helpful.

I disagree. The nature of the fighting these people do doesn't fit the profile of an AR. These people don't return to barracks and have time to strip and clean their AR's so they know it wont malfunction. The need a reliable weapon that can be somewhat neglected (due to their lack of firearms knowledge, or lack of maintinence tools) to keep up the fight. Frankly, given the choice of firearms we have in canada, I would take a VZ or SKS any day over a AR based platform.

I have a few nice ARs, but if the SHTF I will go to my VZ58...name me another rifle that will zap zombies at 14 cents a round.:D

i relate SHTF to 2 scenarios, which are probably never going to happen...
1. an invasion of our country which the police / mil can not stop...
2. zombies, lots of running zombies.

in either case, my goal is to get to the country and get the hell outta dodge. The ar15 is a proven platform. its quick to handle. i can get part for it in any configuration i want from 11.5" barrels to 20(+?) its accurate, easy to service. Why not.

AR's in my opinion tend to be varied ans plentiful in both parts and goodies , etc etc about the ammo as well and if it does come down to SHTF , then would you want the old single shot cooey ( NOTHING against Cooey I have 2 of the little workhorses ) or the bada$$ with the AR slung over your shoulder .

i wouldnt trust an sks with my life.

AR's are good, ammo is plentiful, its reliable enough, id keep some beta c's and dias' on hand though :)

Are you serious? How many SKS malfunctions do you hear of? I've had at least 6 of them and probably shot over 5,000 rnds and never had a single problem. They are easy as crap to work on, have a swell bayonette for those crawling zombies and go bang every time you pull the trigger. Plus ammo is cheap cheap cheap!!

You forgot the third and most likely one: mass civil unrest due to food shortages, lack of power and water, general infrastructure breakdown, etc. The cause can be anything really, from huge natural disaster to a disease pandemic such as bird flu finally mutating to humans. The cities will crumble when all the truck drivers die off and there is no food coming in.

I put together an AR....and it is hitting $4K... WHY??

I don't know.

Is it light, Hell NO!

It looks F'N Dirty that's for sure....

I am gonna switch it out for a M14 set-up.:50cal:

I won't be arrested when walking around the woods with it...........

Exactly! Especially living in the Lower Mainland. In fact I made a post very similar to Bryce's and the ####ing server took a powder.

Think starving, roving crackhead gangs looking to survive. We have no army out here to help us.:(

I never picked the AR...my first foray into Fighting Rifles was a Valmet M76 .223 with side folder...the second was the AUG SA A1, both presumably better than the AR. Neither was as intuitive to use as the AR platform, the biggest downside however was logistical. The Valmet broke a firing pin...this took months to get from Steve Toborg in NY. The Aug had a cycling problem...both of mine. The piston upgrade took months to get. My ARs (except those built on "The Island") have never had an issue and should they, I and all my buddies with all the spares make up what amounts to a 3rd line rebuild facility...sustainability is what makes a SHTF gun...if I lived in Upper butt####istan I would use an AK.
