SHTF : Why AR's ?

I would use an AR simply because its the gun I have the most mags for. Otherwise I would opt for the swiss arms, but then again if things go to #### I doubt swiss arms parts will be avail for when the gun does finally fail.

My vz58L with eotech is my SHTF gun.

-Easy to maintain in the field, few if any tools required.
-Fast target acquisition thanks to the holosight.
-Quite accurate to 300 meters
-Uses a round that will not only punch a hole in a zombie's rotting head, but blow it clean off
-I've got about 3300 rounds for it and a bunch of mags

In the event of a non-collapse of civilization SHTF scenario I'd take a Glock 17 with a bunch of magazines and a shoulder strap.

People forget that having a rifle that you can't conceal will make you a target..
Mac 11/9 (Super Reliable,a great lead hose, and easily concealed)
Ruger MKII (Super Reliable, carry a whack of ammo, nice and quiet)

My AR would be near the last thing i'd grab

Something else to consider - LE agencies in NO promptly began disarming survivors.
Do you really think that this would not happen in Canada? Facilitated by the Registry?
Do some research about a Cdn. document called the "Emergency Planning Order", and of course, the War Measures Act.
Drilling out rivets in AR magazines is pretty small potatos.

Unless they plan to stick around and DEFEND my house, any attempts to disarm me in a Katrina type situation would be "fruitless". Let's leave it at that.

That won't be a factor. You'd need to go looking for potable water and/or food LONG before you ever had to fire off 3300 rounds. In fact, if anyone comes at your house strong enough to require 3300 rounds, you are going to LOOSE.

When you finally DO have to leave sanctuary to forage, you can;t carry anywhere near that much ammo anyhow ;)

VZ58S with side-folding stock is pretty darned concealable as rifles go. Hard-hitting too.

I have actually lived through social breakdowns, 3 of them to exact (the joys of growing up in the 3rd world).
Only once did the firearms see the outside of the cabinet; the two other occasions were military coup attemps, and you do not want to poke your nose outside (armed with civilian hardware) when the local army is going at itself.
On all 3 occasions, LEOs were absent (as were ambulances, fire and rescue, and so on).

If anyone comes to my house requiring 3300 rounds of Ammo I'll arm my family with the rest of my guns and we'll take em out :D The point of having 3300 rounds of ammo though is in case an SHTF scenario drags on a long time it's nice to have more ammo than you'll need. I wasn't implying I'd be running around with 3300 rounds of 7.62 on my back.

As far as potable water, I could go rob someone :D But I live right next to a lake anyways. I can always go grab some of that water and boil it...

Anything is possible in SHTF with a rifle.

And Ronin, you're right concealability is key. Folding stock and a long coat should do it....

Last Katrina annivesary, CBC radio interviewed a canadian journalist who was down there. I forgot for which rag. He was trying to get from Point A to Point B but was stopped what was left of the police contingent. They said something to the effect of "have you ever used a gun before?" I recall that the journalist was at first freaked out, never having handled one, but then was encouraged to take one from the cop in order to continue his travels.

Why limit yourselves to one gun and one scenario?

Remember to use the "proper tool for the job" and that "for every can there is an opener".

TEOTWAWKI - FNs or ARs (one of each for each member of the brick ... er family) depends on where resup is coming from.
AKs in reserve for "additional elements" who lack formal training. (you can never have too much firepower)

Bug out, dig in, patrol aggressively.:pirate:

But really, don't you think that a lot of this isn't just a bit silly?
You've never sat around and talked about what you'd do if you won the lotto? Or how you'd tear that up if you had just a chance with X, Y, or Z actress?

It's a called a bunch of like minded individuals shootin' the #### for fun. Except this actually has a bit of real world use to it.
