Guys, I’m not going to name names or point out rifles but there has been ALOT of rifles be marketed as original, when it couldn’t be further from the truth.

1. Germany never assembled mismatched rifles. There were errors and special cases of a part being recycled, but the old “they just threw together whatever they had on hand “ bull crap sellers like to puke up, is garbage. That never happened. To THE LAST gun, they were matched with at least 5 serial numbers.

2. German reworks. Another common load of junk spouted by sellers. They just put on whatever they had to make the gun work, it’s a wartime refurb. Etc etc. Wartime refurbs fit known and established patterns. The Germans were very anal about everything, and just refurbing a rifle doesn’t make it wartime.

3. You need to study. It’s not all on the seller. Norway, Sweden, Albania, Yugoslavia, Czech rep., Russia, East Germany, west Germany, Bulgaria, France, all used these guns post war and meddled with them. Again they have patterns and signs showing what it is.

About 1% of K98k that have come across my path in a decade of collecting 98k in Canada are matching and correct. So do homework before wasting your money.
I’m just sick of seeing these ads with BS info.

I have helped lots of guys, and am always willing to look at a k98k and tell you the facts of what it is and isn’t. I mainly will tell you it isn’t original wartime German, I group the rest all together. There are also other members willing to assist. As far as credentials, Not that I want to come off as braggy or a know it all, but I proof read the best books on the topic of 98k, I wasn’t selected because I’m a moron who can’t tell what an original rifle is. Lol.

The EE is getting as bad as Gunbroker for BS, Lies and Misrepresentation.

Some sellers haven't a clue what matching is and other sellers play dumb, lie and go for a sucker trying to get top dollar.

Buyer Beware!

I’ve personally called out the last two “original K98 sniper rifles” that hit the EE, but it’s starting to get tiresome. Most buyers don’t read, and most sellers don’t care to know the truth when it’s inconvenient to them...

I wish the mods would take a more hands on approach when it came to the blatant misrepresentations that we’ve been seeing more and more of on the EE...

I miss the days when we could post on the EE to the sellers ad!

Other forums allow you to post. If it's Fake, it's called out as such. If it's real, things are quiet.

But remember how much useless posts you seen? I'm happy they got away from that. I got tired of people being like Oh good luck with your sale, or great price, I trade you for a BMX.. Yeah if you are not going to buy, don't comment.

But what mods are knowledgeable really in that subject matter? Doubt they are going to go thru every post, then research if that one a fake or not. Sometimes the seller don't even know and was just going on by what they were told.

Everyone can flag bad EE posts and mods do their best to follow up. We are trying to monitor blatant false advertizing but folks who know more than us sure can help.

Some people just don't know any better, you have to judge for yourself what's offered. Caveat Emptor.

Grizz

As above in Grizzly’s post. Some people honestly don’t know what they have for sure. But then there are the scammers. You have to separate the two.

But let me give another angle to this.

There are many members who mock, attack and belittle those that post something to gather information. I.e. what do i have? What is it worth etc. Is this rare? etc etc. I do it all the time. I consider myself well versed in a few areas of collecting, but in others i don’t know all that much and depend on the kindness of the other members to help me. I even reach out to some members via PM to get honest answers and evaluations.

Want to post an honest price. I don’t want to get ripped off and i don’t want to rip somebody else off by providing incorrect information.

However until the jerks and a-holes that attack people for asking asking questions are put in their place, there will be some of this “misrepresentation” and “false advertising” (again for those that just don’t know and make honest incorrect assumptions).

In regards to the other poster that mentioned about being able to post within WTS ads. When this was first brought up years ago, i was the lone voice that said we owe to each other and especially to new enthusiasts to be able to publicly point out these errors and false claims. Nothing turns away a new member from the sport than by getting ripped off early in their pursuit. Guess what? I was roasted by a bunch of f’ing pricks about this. “Buyer beware” , “if they don’t know any better they deserve to get burned” etc etc.

So there you have it. Its not just dishonest sellers, but the caustic culture of this place when it comes to this topic.

But there are alot of people, that are just too lazy to research and expect others to give them the answers. I'm seeing this trend more, even with simple stuff ( Where can I find a disassembly manual, or how to ?) Figure if they ask enough, surely someone one will do the work for them.

It is a constant source of disappointment on this site to see the attacks of posters. If you don’t know ask, and if you can’t help STFU. Telling someone there gun is worth $5 is an infantile reply that helps no one. Looking up prices often is US only, does not help here. The op is trying to help and we need more of that. Let the pissing match begin.

This forum could use a 'like this' choice.

As others have said, I believe there is both ignorance (with no intent to deceive) and outright purposeful misrepresentation at play on the ee. But this has likely always been true on any selling site. It is sad to see a newbie getting scammed, i suppose partially because we were all that newbie at some point.

Just had an fellow bring by an Lee Enfield he had just bought (not on this site), that wouldn't chamber 303, although it had been sold as one. Turns out the barrel had been re-lined, and rechambered to 303-257. Luckily it couldn't fully chamber a 303 or the results likely wouldn't have been great. Whether the seller had any clue as to the actual chambering, who knows. But it certainly gave a new collector a sour taste.

I bought an antique 455 Webley, never fired it, and resold it. Was contacted by the new owner who did shoot it. And after getting terrible accuracy, measured everything, and discovered that although the cylinder was 455, the barrel was 44. I of course reimbursed the buyer, and took the gun back. I ended up re-lining the cylinders down to 44, and loosing money. At some point, somebody through ignorance or greed combined that cylinder and barrel., who knows which.

Point is that when buying used guns, you really need to have some knowledge, and take nothing for granted. And if you don't have the required knowledge, seek out someone who does.

For a new person who has not become aware of all the info available on the net, it might be a good move to help them, instead of batting them down. Whenever I come across some good info, I usually add it to a data base kept in OneNote, a free Microsoft app. I have it stored on several computers and iPads, mainly to ease access and to safeguard the info.

Maybe offering a link or a bit of info would be good to help someone along. Try it. It works.

Thank you for this information! It is great that you stepped up and informed us about this. Not braggy at all brother, I appreciate it!

I should add that this was brought about by several times of the last few months, informing people gently that their stuff is not what they purport, only to be attacked. It isn’t anyone’s fault you bought uneducated 10, 20, 100 years. Non original is non original.

I’m messaged by lots of guys any time a “original” gun is posted and have to tell them all, it’s bad, messed with etc. I sell everything with as much knowledge I can get. If I’m ever wrong, I’d be thankful for the correction, and adjust as necessary. Not ignore facts like some type of moron.

I remember this, we all chatted and agreed it was a early post war re make. Nice looking one and almost had me convinced it was the real deal.

I try to pay attention to detail as much as I can and know. It pays off.

So I'm not wrong in thinking the Milsurp market has gone a bit wild in the last decade? Sounds like the issue the OP is talking about is related.
