Sick and tired of K98k rifles being misrepresented on the EE.

Describes perfectly why milsurps don't interest me much.

I have no desire to get ripped off by some misrepresented restored/cobbled together firearm.

I’ve noticed a jump in price since the prohib of all the fun rifles.

I have seen at least two major jumps in the last few years. It has kept me from a lot of purchases since my main interest is in black rifles.

It's definitely easier to make a mistake checking things out when there is so much history. It is somewhat easy to spot a fake with minor research but some are very well done.

So I'm not wrong in thinking the Milsurp market has gone a bit wild in the last decade? Sounds like the issue the OP is talking about is related.

Yeah... your not wrong.

I find it difficult to buy milsurps today as I know what the values were a decade ago and I’m a cheap bastard. lol. I just want something to shoot because I like Mausers and at the current going rate I might as well assemble my own.

I wonder if anyone has actually payed the overinflated price for a Type-81? Which will eventually be a paperweight at this rate.

I don't even really care I just want something in decent enough condition to be a fun shooter but everything right now does seem to be priced like a pristine museum piece .

Guns that were under 100$, covered in grease, nearly tripled in price.

I think the miss interpretation, is wrong if they are selling them as collector pieces. if they are just selling them as K98 8mm full wood, miss match.. I consider those shooters. Like I got a cabinet full of those.

Jump was way before the prohib. Less than 5 years ago, could by a SVT for under 300$, a Mosin 91/30 for under 100$, a SKS for 150.

I remember $99 Mosins not long ago too. I had little interest in milsurp until my grandfather gave me his Jungle Carbine before passing. It really seems like this past 10 years has seen this market blow right up. It's lead me to do things like buy repros instead of actual surplus. If the price is the same, why not?

No, I Disagree.
When something Stinks it should be outed.
That goes for Clueless Unknowledgeable Seller as well as the Dishonest SOB Seller.
Say it in a nice way as not to offend whether it’s good or bad.

It’s not just K98’s with problems, it’s other guns too...

Sure, keep the useless comments out and even Mod edit them.

But remember how much useless posts you seen? I'm happy they got away from that. I got tired of people being like Oh good luck with your sale, or great price, I trade you for a BMX.. Yeah if you are not going to buy, don't comment.

But what mods are knowledgeable really in that subject matter? Doubt they are going to go thru every post, then research if that one a fake or not. Sometimes the seller don't even know and was just going on by what they were told.

For the little amount of calling out fakes. There were more useless posts, than useful. Thus more work for mods to clean up the ads.. Plus I hatted logging in, because I got a email, because I got a reply to my post, and realize it was something useless.

I’m not for protecting any Unscrupulous Seller.

I'm also in support of bringing back the ability to comment, it would cut down on a lot of the fakes. We've all seen a lot of "original" pieces get posted here by the buyers only to discover it was a real stinker.

Comments would be the end of the EE, my .02. Every “expert” would comment on an item. Do you research before buying an item.
Keep it like it is now please!

Comments would likely just end in a ####show but there should be a specific fraud report feature so that obvious scams, or accidentally very incorrectly posted items can be reported and maybe removed.

That said, it should almost be common knowledge that buying high grade K98s is very difficult....

Can you tell us what to look for? Other than 5 matching serials.

So it is a very complex area of study. 5 serials is only for the late guns. Prewar guns have nearly 30, mid war about 20. You have to know what original parts look like, which parts got 4 digits, which parts can have two, what all the waffenamts mean and where they were stationed at which time as to be correct on the gun in question. Really complex. Takes a long time.

Then Bring on one more area to comment in a separate Off Topic called the “Burning Ring Of Fire” to comment about Fakes and Humped Rifles that Stink on the EE and other websites.

Make it a watch and learn for the new collector as to why it is not correct.
Keep it civilized. Be nice. No personal attacks on Seller.

I'm not protecting them. Just saying that I am glad they got rid of the ability to comment, because was more useless posts, and useful. Alot of bickering and other BS. You can feel free to report the post with your findings.

The ability to comment was before my time here but I could imagine it now with all the trolls, bitter ####e disturbers and the auto-negators. It would ruin CGN EE.

However there's a flip side to that as well. I have seen a S&W Model 1917 45 ACP of probably no later than 1946 vintage on our EE. The barrel & cylinder were replaced and it was touted as a factory built 357. There was no adjustable rear sight and the differences in finish obvious to the human eye. It was pushed as a Model 27.
I pointed this out to a moderator and got a ho hum reply.
I truly wonder if the newest owner still owns his eyesight and ten fingers.

Buyer beware.
