I just got a 500 box of the SIERRA 169 Matchkings - The BC .527 is considerably highler then the old 168 MK Bullet ( .462 ) shape is different and they look really Slick . I will use the same Varget load and start them off at 20 thou back . This Bullet is supposed fly much better at long distance plus 600 yards then the old 168 . 😊 RJ

Any one else shooting these at distance from ur 308 Win ?

Are they tipped? I didnt know sierra came out with a new bullet/redesign...
  • No they are NOT tipped . RJ
  • This bullet was designed with one thing in mind, and that was to shoot 1000 yards in a 308 Winchester. To accomplish that, we added length to the boattail and engineered a forgiving tangent ogive with a closed nose ! ;)

TMK have a 0.535 bc, wonder why they needed to intro another option
May be the Tipped isn't the flavour du jour

Sierra also has a new MK-X 175 for long range hunting

RJ, I'm assuming your barrel has a 1-10 twist???

I tried some of those in a 1-12.5 twist custom barrel and couldn't get them going fast enough to stabilize reliably.

No my rifle is a 12 twist 29 Inch and shoots 150 thru 185 gr JuggerNauts with NO Problems ! I have not shot any loads past 700 metres yet BUT so far no Stability problem's at All ! I have a few 200.20x ers im gonna try at 500 metres just for sh*ts and giggles and see if they stabilize ! :p RJ

That 29 inch bbl likely gives them enough velocity for stabilization, along with a near max load for accuracy?

The barrel on my rifle was 22 inches same diameter as the Remington receiver it was attached to. Shot flat base bullets up to 155 grains better than I could hold.

I wasn't shooting past 300 yds, so didn't need the velocity for the bullets that were working.

Let us know how this works for you.

2787 FPS
22ā€ Remington 5R Carbon Steel
Varget
Detailed PMC Brass
Winchester Primer

Shot it out to 1000 @ MKM during one of their Steel Challenge events with success. Have yet to check for groups beyond 300m. Just hit steel with it beyond that point. Data has me supersonic out to 1025. No sense in buying these if you’re not pushing 800+ yards. The 168s will do you just fine.

Late post.

Oh cool. Never heard of these but i prefer the 175s over the 168s

Maybe the 169s need a whirl
The reason I stepped away from the 175 is because it went subsonic @ 900y being pushed 2720 fps by 45gr of Varget and still wasn’t where I needed to be. Needed more range. The 169 is better than either of the other 2 for long range by far. The math Maths. But again, don’t buy this if you’re not pushing 800+ yards. You will not gain any accuracy from these projectiles. They share the same body as the 168 & 175 just a different ass. Google it. The 175s are still king out of a 24ā€+ barrel from what the other boys shooting 1000 are saying. My barrels are just too short it seems to achieve full BC out of them. Short stick problems.

If your rifle shoots the Berger 185gr Juggernauts well, what advantage does the the lighter 169gr match king bullet offer. I shoot the Juggernaut and have been happy with it. I am shooting it out of a heavier rifle I suspect than yours (AI). I am pretty new at this and am like to learn from other's experience. It saves me time ,embarrassment $$!

Thanks!

Oh wow. Hmm ok. My load is 42.3 gr of varget with a 24ā€ bbl and velocity is 2600. Another 100fps when really hot out i knew from old barrels load of 44.6 gr

I was under the impression my 2600 fps load was supersonic to 1100 yards and have done some fine groups at 1000 , so no probably not gonna hit the drawing board again with my fav rifle. Esp since i dont have access to 1000 yards plus easily anymore.

My garand is in the hospital atm and prefers 168s over 150 s but going to start load developing all over again when i get back ……. Thought the 169s would be nice in there for possibly service style / low power / iron competitions to 500

I mean no disrespect, how did you come across this data? I’m using strelok pro.

THE Sierra bullets are cheaper and less recoil ! My rifle weights 14.5 lbs ready to shoot . 😊

We use the Shotmarker targets with the velocity of each shot indicated on the screen.
Takes out ALL the guesswork!
We have found some big discrepancies with several computer generated apps with them as opposed to what actually occurs at distance .
I intend to pick up some of the new 169's and try them out , they sound like a great thing for older sling shooters who have trouble with the recoil of a 308 šŸ™‚

You both are in dramatically different environments.
I would be surprised if you didn't have 3000 ft of elevation and 60% difference in humidity between you. Central Alberta v Ontario.

Our nice thin dry air here is much nicer to squeaking out distance. It seems dramatic but I could attribute the 200 yards difference in hitting the subsonic range to that.
