Theres going to be lots of people chime in here, lots of people own them. Sigforum is a good resource for info on the Sig 226. I owned one for a while but sold it in favor of other platforms, I didnt like the high bore axis or the placement of the controls, my offhand hit the slide stop frequently causing the slide to not lock back on empty. I did however like the trigger, smooth DA and the SRT single action is very nice, the E2 grip I had on mine also felt good in the hand. I admittedly dont have a lot of trigger time behind the 226, I only fired about 2k rounds through mine, but shot it enough to know I preferred other guns, the only way your going to know if you like it or not is if you try it out.
I have had a serious issue with my P226R. Ever since I bought it, I go through three times the ammo I used to before I got it. It seems the Sig P226 is not ammo efficient and consumes about 200 rounds every range visit. It is an "ammo guzzler"!!! Also, after shooting the P226, my jaw hurts from the continuous "sh1t-eating grin" on my face...

The Sig P226 is one of those pistols that sets the standard on performance and reliablity. I haven't had any issues with mine. I used it for a couple of IPSC matches outdoors where there is a lot of sand and dirt. My mags become filled with debris and the P226 still performs without issue. Most people take their mags apart and run a brush through them before their next stage but I like putting my Sig to the test. It isn't hard to see why Navy Seals, SAS, etc use it as their sidearm of choice.
Love my 226 but I got it used from a dealer (Wolverine) it was a very good deal. I would recommend saving a few bucks and looking for a Sig-Certified pistol or buy used. I really think the current prices are a little inflated not to mention the dozens of gimmicky versions with fancy grips and silly names. However, if you can get a 226 for under $800 I would say go for it otherwise there are better values out there.
I bought my sig 226 9 mm in September and have put probably 1500 rounds through it. I find it very reliable, accurate and am a huge fan man. Hoping to get more sig products in the coming future. If you got the funds I would say go for a p226 and you won't regret it
Just make sure you shoot one first so you know what you're getting into. I preffer the large grip, especially with my rosewood or hogue grips on, but I won't deny it takes some getting used to. My hand is more comfortable holding the grip, but it does take some adjustments to find the way your hand will let you get a clean, crisp trigger pull without shaking the barrel around. Also read up on Sig sights and know which one you're getting. The sight picture for combat/night sights on a 226 is very different than the norm, first time I ever shot one I was getting consistently low groups by about 6 inches because no one told me. Now that I have my own, I was almost ready to get rid of it until the last time I took it to the range. Finally shot an almost dead bullseye with it and I'm pretty sure I've got it licked now. My fave all around for ergonomics, easy to strip and clean, and just really fun to shoot.
Great pistol. If it fits your hand you will most likely love it. If you were local I'd let you try mine and see if you like it. I suggest you try someone's if possible and see. Don't think you can go wrong with a Sig 226.

Shoots too good, can't seem to stop going to the range with it. That's my only issue, got in 40s&w, thanks to the weight the recoil is very manageable almost like a +p 9mm.
Once my RPAL comes in the mail a Sig 226 will be my first purchase. I have used one at a range a couple times and loved it every time. I did have the problem with my thumb hitting the slide lock as well, but with some practice I am sure I will figure out a better way to hold it so the problem doesn't persist.
I've put probably 5000 rounds between a couple of 226's (ones from work) and I love them. Got one myself for a really good price from a local store, and it will be the LAST gun I ever give up for any reason. I'll contemplate selling a kidney before selling my 226. Only put a few hundred rounds through mine so far, thinking about getting the SRT in it though. Biggest issue I've had with it so far is trying to find a holster that I can use with it.

When the US military was selecting the M9 pistol there were only two pistols that survived every torture test they dreamed up, the SIG 226 and the Beretta 92FS. The Beretta then edged out SIG on price to become the M9, but both pistols passed those tests. Both have subsequently been used extensively in the field in far more grueling circumstances than your pistol will ever face, and held up well. It's fair to say that no other pistol out there has proven itself as reliable as these two pistols have. Emphasis on proven--there are newer pistols that might be as reliable, emphasis on might.
What a coincidence, I have both in my lineup. I originally intended on selling the one I liked least. That was 3 years ago and I still can't decide. If money was an object, I would reluctantly but decisively keep the Sig.
Yes, it doesn't work for everyone. I've had a Sig 239, 220, 226, 226 Elite, 226 Platinum Elite and 1911 and they've all been fantastic. So the OP can make up his own mind. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
