Anyone know if this is a complicated job for a gunsmith to do? I'm thinking of getting a P220 Match Elite but can't stand the beavertail on the Elites.

Grayguns has done it, but I think only on stainless frames. I seem to recall he doesn't recommend it for alloy frames. Give Bruce a call, he knows more about SIGs than all of us combined.

Might be easiest to trade out the frame if you're starting with a stock gun & go from there.

edit: NVM, apparently that IS a stainless frame, so no help with the swapping, but the tailectomy might be easier. Now I've gotta ask though: Why not just go for the Super Match? The Match/Match Elites always seemed to me like the red headed stepchild that never really fit in. Not that much different than std P220s, not "accurized", just an extra 1/2" of barrel. At least the Super Match comes tweaked and lightly massaged with a SA trigger....

I never thought of getting the Super Match. I'll have to look into it now :) Only reason I thought of the Match Elite is because Cabelas has them right now for $1199 which I think is an awesome deal for an all stainless Sig with aluminium grips and SRT and I think the long slide looks very nice.

I didn't know that about the nitron/stainless frames. It makes sense though.

I thought so too. About 3 years ago, I came across a Match in a local fun shop & loved the way it looked. Decent price, too. Then I looked into it. Turns out that, despite the "Match" name, there's really nothing special about it vice a normal P220 except for the length. The Super Match, on the other hand, has some work done by SIG's Custom Shop, and have a reputation for being a step up in terms of accuracy. (But hey, that might just be the trigger, who knows?)

Meowever, heading down that road, maybe we should all just buy X-Six L1s and call it a day. Lol.

I guess if you think about it, the price difference between an L1 and a Match Elite is about $1500. Given the amount of time you will own this pistol, say the rest of your lifetime and your kids lifetime as well, the actual price difference is very small.:D

That's the spirit! That's why price should never enter into a discussion of what gun to buy.

I'm not a big fan of the beavertail either but someone posted pic's on Sigforum of their new Stainless 229 Elite which they had sent off to a reputable refinisher to have the tail and rail removed. Let's just say the results were not something I would be happy with. Most of the tail was gone but it still looked odd and it wasn't cheap to have it done.

I will have to do a search on sigforum, I'm kinda curious what it will look like. I spoke to someone at Ellwood Epps this morning and they said that they can mill off the tail no problem but it will probably be noticable.

The thread on Sigforum was from a guy who bought two 229 Elites both all stainless. He posted pic's of the pistols when he bought them and then follow up shots when he got them back. The tail removal was very "noticable" and looked very odd. The rail removal was even worse as the "lugs" were gone and the frame rounded but the "groove" was still there. The modifications were done by a well known U.S. company and I'm sure the quality of the work was first rate but the results were not something I would be happy with especially as I imagine they were not cheap.

I think this is the thread you are referring to?

I don't think the beaver chop looks too bad :) I think the porting on the slide looks a bit much though.

That's the one but I forgot about the "porting". Yeah that is a bit much. It seems to me that there were more pic's of the tail removal from a different angle which didn't look as good. I'm not sure what they did to modify the hammer stop but if you look at an Elite model the stop is at a different angle and much more of the rear of the hammer is exposed as compared to a non-beavertailed model.

Buy a classic in .22cal and use the frame from it and get the .22 kit as well. Likley about the same cost.

Know what my favourite thing is?

When ppl don't read the thread. Or even just the very first post.
