Sig Cross rifle pics and a few words

Getting the thread back on track, I took my SIG Cross out to the range today for the initial sight-in and ammo down-select. I bore-sighted the rifle with the first shot landing 2" from zeroed with Hornady 120 gr AMAX Match. This load produced 5-round groups in the 2 MOA range at 100m. Up next was 125 gr Winchester "USA Ready" economy "Match" ammo. This load produced results roughly the same as the 120 gr Hornady at approximately 2 MOA. 140 gr Federal Gold Medal Match ammo produced groups in the 1.5 MOA range, which I also found to be surprisingly disappointing. FGMM has always been my "go to" ammo when all else fails, however with my particular SIG Cross it produces mediocre results. The best results came with two different loads of Hornady Match ammo, both using an ELD ballistic-tipped bullet. The 140 gr ELD Match produced the first group below 1 MOA, which was typical of the 4 x 5-shot groups fired with that load, The other heavier Hornady load with a 147 gr ELD balistic-tip projectile produced the other sub-MOA groups shown. Again, these results were typical of the 4 x groups fired using that particular load. The early results attained with the Hornady140 and 147 gr ELD Match loads were very promising and deserving of further investigation with other brands using similarly-weighted projectiles.

All things considered, I am quite pleased with the accuracy demonstrated thus far by the 18" 6.5 CM SIG Cross barrel. The results are consistent with the Cross rifle's overall high level of manufacturing precision and fit/finish, resulting in a package that will easily hold its own on the PRS circuit as well as in the field hunting. As expected, all loads were approx 150 ft/sec slower at the muzzle than suggested by the factory box. This loss of 100m worth of velocity is due to the short(er) 18" tube rather than the typical 24" barrel found on most 6.5CM offerings. I can happily live with the slightly slower Muzzle Velocity of the SIG Cross now that I have my Kestrel DOPE to compensate for any practicable distance.

Nice results! Hornady 140gr ELDM has always been my go to factory ammo to test out a new 6.5 creed barrel. I've yet to find a barrel it doesn't shoot in. How fast is 150fps less than the box, 2600ish?

I would revisit the 120 Amax, 125gr Win and FGMM ammo now that you have some rounds downrange. I have rarely found the first rounds down the pipe of a new rifle to be as good as what the rifle eventually shows for precision

Agreed. I find it takes up to 100 rounds for a barrel to really “settle”.

Bartok5, thank you for the report, very encouraging results! Can you comment on the bolt release? I only got a brief chance to look at a Cross, and the only thing that seemed particularily lacking was the little thin tab type release? But again, very brief inspection. Thanks!

The Bolt Release Is a folded and shaped piece of sheet steel which forms a serrated push-Tab which is easily accessed at the top rear of the Receiver. I don't find it to be flimsy in any way and it operates in a positive manner just as it ought to. Obviously, YMMV and opinions may differ, but I don't see the Bolt Catch as a weak point of the design. It is easily more robust than that of the Rem 700 or the Bolt Catch found on other Bolt-Action hunting designs.

Are there really two different hand guards for these rifles as depicted on the Sig website?...

It seems everyone is getting the Handguard from the top picture. I like the looks of the bottom one better. :(

The rifle pictured on the lower pic has a 16" barrel so that's why the HG looks longer if that's what you meant. Other than that, they are exactly the same except for the different style cut outs but I think they will be coming with the HG in the top pic for either 6.5 or 308.

This I believe the handguard pictured in the lower photo is from a pre-production prototype, they probably missed that photo with the old handguard when putting up their marketing materials.

The pre-production Prototype also had an AR style ejection port cover as well that got axed for the final version.

I prefer the HG in the top pic, but to be honest I kinda wish they would have left the dust cover on the production rifle.

So is there anything actually different about it? Have they added some sort of spacer to give it more length?

Word on the street is they added a machined aluminum block between the receiver and the stock.

Now it's just over the 26" minimum when folded.
