Sig P226 - is there another gun?

I think SIG is a great gun but unless I win a lottery I’m not paying $1200+ for a basic model. You not going to lose anything (in fact you might gain something) by getting a Beretta for $900 (black).

Yeah we get it, you think Beretta's are the best thing since slice bread and HK and Sigs are overpriced. You sound like a broken record.

I agree, I won't pay $1200 for a gun either. That's why I will buy it in the USA through an FFL and spend $600 US ($720CDN) for the same gun, or what I probably will buy is a Sig stainless .40 S&W with rail and nite sites for $750 US ($900CDN)

I think any price savings by purchasing in the US will be negated when you factor in the brokerage fees to get an export permit, etc.

Questar. $100

You'll still have to pay duties and taxes. When all is said and done, I doubt you will save enough to have made it worth the lenghty wait. The export permit can take up to 4 months to get.

I think Questar's services are terrific for getting stuff that you otherwise couldn't get in Canada, but if you can get it here you probably won't save much importing it yourself. It's not like most Canadian dealers are out there charging outrageous profit margins... Plus they deserve our support.

I have or have owned and or shot most of the big name selfloaders.so I can give
you my humble opinion. But remember this my opinion base on my experience,
requirement and preference.
#1 toss up between 1911 and Glock 23 Love both some customizing to each of them to fit specific needs.choose one over the other based on the requirement
at the time.
#2 Xd40 Only had it for about 8 month but its so dam good its working its way
into the #1 spot(its getting real crowded up there)
#3 sig 226 Ive had Two both were the older Late 80's vintage .Ive alreday described the one I still have in the other post.
#4 Cz family Love the abilityto go condition one or double action and I was able to
pull the hammer back similar to half #### safety and reduce the trigger reach on mine regret selling it but enough dollars were flashed in front of my nose.
#5 HK Ive had various veersions over the years.Yep theyre expensive but they are good. current crop depending of the model do not disapont .
#6 HI Power not much needs to be said there. All good
#7 At the risk of pissing off a lot of Beretta fans .They just never really
Tripped my Trigger.Good quality very acucrate good value but too thick
and cant stand the grip.Of the diff varients The Brigadier and elite are my choices.
#8 Smiths Are oh so ###Y but Kind of like the Blode jokes. The older ones
gave birth to the jamamatic rep. The newer ones are good and have improved the
erganomics. The new 1911 version looks awesome but havent hadthe chance to
shoot one yet.Like the external extractor It was the week point on the original
design. With Langdon moving over to Smith &Wesson I'm really excited about what
could be because we all like em ###Y.
#9 Ruger!!.love thier revolvers not a fan of the autos at all.A couple of very knowledgable friends love them. But I dont feel the love or even the like.More like
If its All thats avaliable I'll grin and bear it untill almost anything else comes along.
Sorry the .22 are great.
Ive shot a lot of Desert Eagles but are not a first or only gun thing.
Well those are my thoughts.wish I could make it a top ton but I an only comment
on what I know 1st hand.
Take for what its worth to you
Regards

I've shot alot of handguns...but never really had a chance to do a heads up review. Im heading down to the states to rent guns all day and find which ones fit my hands the best. After my review, I will post up the findings all as many models as I can. Im bringing a none partisan new shooter that has no bias with me for the reviews!

That's what I want to do. Where are you going to try out guns?
Thanks

Actually the duty is 3% and they don't always choose to charge it. I have to pay the US FFL guy $25.00 to bring it to the border from where I take it home. Yay free enterprise and global economy.

Well if you have a dealer that is a registered charity, and you have so much money that you don't have to search out ways to save, and you have a wife that cheers you on with each gun you buy, then pay $1,500.00 for your gun and I (being less fortunate) will pay $850 for mine.

That's a tad harsh.. But okay. I guess I'm just happy to pay a bit more to be able to start shooting my new gun today and not 3 or 4 months from now. And FWIW, most of the brand spankin' new Sigs that I've seen here in AB are going for $1100 - $1200 depending on model.

Avsecb2, you've got me interested in the whole importing thing. If you don't mind, can you post a cliffnotes version of all the steps one needs to follow to bring the gun over the border (i.e. how to apply for the export permit, etc.) I always assumed that bringing a gun over is just too expensive/impractical but your post got me thinking. If it's as simple as paying a 3% duty and the FFL dealer's transfer fee, it sure sounds interesting.

Here is the URL which gives you the step by step procedure"
http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/eicb/military/faq-en.asp?format=print

Let me know if it doesn't work and I'll get it to you another way.
I asked customs at the border about the duty and he said 3% if they decide to charge it.
When I asked a gun dealer in Vancouver why his gun was $1250 and online price was $550, he did not have a good answer ( you would think he would quickly tell me if there was a good reason) He just mumbled something about the manufacturer ships to only one importer here in Canada and they distribute and make money from it (sounds lame).
The FFL guy said just phone him when I am ready to have it shipped to him (r buy it from him) and he will charge $25.00 to take it to the border.
At this point that's all I know. I will soon be trying out the process.
Hope that helps

Sorry to be rude and crude. Here is the URL that tells me it will take 2-3 weeks along with all the steps necessary.

The gun I started with cost $1250 in Vancouver compared to $550 online, and a dealer here had no answer for me about why the difference. That started my quest.

I think SIG is a great gun but unless I win a lottery I’m not paying $1200+ for a basic model. You not going to lose anything (in fact you might gain something) by getting a Beretta for $900 (black).

I got my Sig 226 R for under 900 :p Beretta isn't even close to a SIG, a SIG is far better then the Beretta. Sig has a much smoother recoil then the beretta. The Beretta its alot heavier, more bulky, just dont fit me like the Sig does. I say it hard to buy another pistol, becuase since I own a sig, I really dont have the erge to buy another pistol.

The overwhelming majority of my trigger time is with a Beretta 96D. It's a long heavy trigger on a heavy gun. I go back and forth with the grip size. Sometimes it feels too big and then other times it feels like I'm getting used to it. That said, with enough practice and stick-to-it-iveness you get used to it and can become quite proficient.

I also have a Sig P-226R and P-228 in 9mm DA/SA. I think they're both fantastic guns, and frankly I enjoy the 228 more than the 226. I find the 226 grip to be a bit beefy, but again with larger hands that may work well for you.

A factory refurb Sig can be had for around $900, if not a little less. So unless you have your heart set on new out of the box that might be an option.

I'm also curious about exporting from the US. I think living close to the US border is an advantage in that regards. I know you have to contend with US export permits and Canadian import permits, but I'd be curious to know exatly how much bureaucracy is really involved and whether or not it's worth the hassle compared to the savings. Keep us updated.

i know for FACT that you can buy a brand new SIG226 9mm with a RAIL, and Night Sites for $1150 from a dealer in vancouver. I was just in the states and a local reputable gun shop and i found most of the prices were dead on the dollar with our gun store prices. Think about a glock 17 for exampe, here new. $800. Ok, in the states new $650 or so. Do the math. If your going to import a gun, use Questar, they can take care of all the paperwork for you. Mind you thats $100 dollars more on top of it all. I will admit thou, some gun shops are selling glock 17s in vancouver for $1000 or more, i dont know what to say about that thou.

Im heading down to "Wade's gun shop" for the second time! Make sure you go with another person, i wasnt alowed to shoot any guns the first time. Go to www.packing.org for info on all the gun rental shops in the entire usa!

cheers.

Sorry do I know you? FYI almost any gun in Canada is over priced. But IMO HKs and SIGs are overpriced the most and not just in Canada…

Well was it new? :p If the gun doesn’t fit your hand that is not really a guns fault, plus there is a Vertec version that should fit anyone. Now how is Beretta a lot heavier? They both have alloy fames if anything there is 5oz difference and that is not a lot, also p226 is not a small gun by any means; a little shorter than 92FS but is definitely bulky. Beretta has sharper recoil? :? Hmm I though it's one of the lightest recoiling 9mm/.40 esp. if you have a Brigadier/Elite version (not that I mind recoil). BTW didn’t you say once that you haven’t really looked at Berettas? :?

Beretta 92fs> 34.4 oz

SIG 226> 28.3 oz

Glock 17> 22.04 oz

The beretta is 6 ounces heavier than the SIG, yet 12 ounces more than the glock 17.
