Someone told me (this might not be completely true) that the .22 model had more plastic in it (guide rod)
The .22lr upper (slide, barrel, guide rod, etcd.) is the same whether you are buying the .22lr kit or the .22 Classic... the BOTH have a plastic guide rod and both are made of different materials than the 9mm or 40S&W upper (slide, barrel, guide rod, etc.).
But when you install the X-Change kit you are installing a full quality 9mm or 40S&W slide, barrel, etc. so either way you end up with a full strenght (if you will) 9mm or 40S&W regardless of how you start out... and either way you end up with a "regular .22lr slide/barrel/guide rod" no matter how you start out.
It's simply that SIG priced the Classic 22 and the X-Change Kit as a better deal (we don't expect them to keep offering that deal as it's costing them money doing it this way).
