SIG vs. HK vs. Beretta vs. GLOCK vs. Steyr vs. Walther

Yup, of all the old posts that get dug up, this one deserves to be looked at. Lots of good info and lots of questions answered. The only problem with this thread is it makes me want to blow a grand on a Sig :D

Hey Ghostie,

Excellent post, very helpful as I have been pondering between some of the pistols you have gone into here, thanks a bunch. Now I just have to hold a couple of them and my choice can be made:), cheers.

Brent

ugh, i hate you. now i want all of these. well, except for the glock, they hold no interest for me. i suppose i'll eventually get one to round out the collection, but it will definitely be a, "oh yeah, i guess i need a glock," situation

greetings ghostie

this deserves a sticky, but i'll just subscribe to it for now

you remind me of the batman movie, how jack nicholson (the joker) says about michael keaton (the batman) "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" regards

I wish people would stop using the USP as the benchmark for HK. The USP is almost 20 years old, and the company has come out with more modern designs, namely the P2000, P30 and HK45, wich are ahead(at least for the P2000, that wher emy experience is) of the USP in terms of controlability, fun factor, comfort and looks. And before you tell me that the Glock is a 20yo design as well. Glock hasnt improved on it really, where as HK doesnt sit on it's laurels.

But the USP is the trademark of H&K :D

I have the P99 in a titanium slide and I really like the gun. I do agree with your observation concerning recoil. The recoil with winclean ammo is noticable and takes some getting use to. Accuracy with the winclean isn't the best maybe 3 1/2" groups at 10 meters for me and does shoot high. The gun seems to like the lighter 115gr bullets more then the heavier ones. I was able to make the recoil very soft and improve on the accuracy down to around 1.5" to 2" groups by reloading 115gr hornady xtp's and unique powder. The reloads are under max power and cycles the action beautifully. The commercial loads I believe are a lot hotter.

:)

I went digging for this thread as I'm looking into getting my 1st pistol... my mind is pretty much fixed already but that is still an interesting post.

back up for those that missed it.

only if you play Rainbow Six :p

the USP is was and is a workhorse. THe P2000 built on that reputation,...the HK45 and P30-L is a world apart from the USP. Same drop dead reliability,..much better ergonomics.

Not for all. I prefer the ergonomics of the USP and P2000 to the Hk45 and P30L... and yes I've had both.

Smith & Wesson M&P9

OK, let me just start by saying this is such an awesome thread ghostie! I just think it's such a shame that it's been around for a year and a half and no one else has expanded on the list of guns covered.

So let me see if I can help get things rolling again with some pics of my new Smith & Wesson M&P9. I haven't shot it yet, still waiting on my long term ATT. It's taking forever!

Tried to take the photos from the same angles where possible to make it easier to compare the M&P with the others ghostie posted. I only realized after putting it away that it would have been nice to show the backstraps and take-down tool in the field stripping photo. If I get a chance, I'll try to get it and post it later.

I encourage others to add to the thread to help make this a one-stop shopping experience for new handgun buyers.

^ That's a beauty!

I'm also looking for my first handgun. As I am some what on a budget (<$800). I've narrowed it down to

Beretta 92FS 9mm
- Good: Great gun. Military issued so that must say something about reliability and effectiveness. BEAUTIFUL design in my opinion. I really like the decocking lever as well.
- Not so good: It's on the expensive side of my budget (~$799). The grips maybe sliiiiightly to big for my hand though it is not uncomfortable. If it was ~$600-700, I'd pick one up right away.

S&W M&P 9mm
- Good: Out of the handguns I've tried so far, it fit my hand the best (adjustable palm sizes). The weight feels well balanced in my hand. I like the look of it better than the Glock. Decently priced for ~$680.
- Not so good: I'm not a fan of double action only guns because most lack a manual safety. Also the pull is longer if I'm not mistaken. I originally said no polymer when I handled the Glock but after feeling out the M&P, I decided not to rule it out.

CZ-75B 9mm
- Good: Looks to be a reliable gun and it seems like a lot of people use it for IPSC. I haven't had the chance to shoot one yet but apparently it fits people's hand very well and it has a lot of after market support. Pricing is also decent at ~$650. This is very likely going to be my first handgun.
- Not so good: Not sure whether I'm quite liking the looks of the gun yet. I think the SP 01 looks awesome. Still a decent looking gun.

As of now, it's between the CZ-75B and the S&W M&P. I'm leaning towards the CZ since it has a manual safety on it and as a first time shooter I think it may be something I should have. If I could find a 92FS brand new for around $600-700 I'd pick one up right away. Hopefully I can make my decision by the weekend.
