Went to the range to-day to shoot my latest acquisition for the first time. Fired at 50 yards, the shortest distance available for center fire ammo. Had two targets up side by side with about a 6 in. space between, slightly smaller than full newspaper page.
1) First five rounds at right-hand target. One hit low left barely on paper, other 4 about a 5 in. group low right on the left-hand target. So far so good.
2) Extended bayonet and fired 5 rounds at right-hand target. No hits whatsoever.
3) Fold bayonet and fire 5 rounds to right of right target, no hits.
4) 5 rounds 12 o'clock high on right target, no hits.
5) Try to repeat 1) aiming center, no hits.
Watching the dust kick up behind the targets looked like shots were going all over the place. And I guess things just got worse as the barrel heated up.
Any advice from Mosin shooters out there? I suppose I need to go to a 25 yard range to get a better idea of what is going on. BTW shooting 1971 Chinese ammo. Problem?

I've had the same issue...shooting 180gr sp S&B at 50 yds rested on my hand sitting at the bench and on a few 2x4s....maybe just be user error since I'm trying to get used to shooting lefty as my left eye is dominant. I could use a hand as well....

Double check the action screws. The M44 likes to loosen them as it's fired. Sounds exactly like the issues I had, tightened everything up and bam, was putting shots ontop of eachother at 50m standing.

howasan, were you using a bench rest, or was this standing, or...

What ammo?

Lou

Shooting seated at bench rest, front hand guard supported, butt shouldered hand held. Shooting Chinese made ammo dated 1971. Don't know anything about it; was sold to me as Hungarian. Maybe I should try my Bulgarian heavy ball.
The idea of checking the action screw sounds good. I now recall that my original M44 had a loose one when I had it in at my gunsmith's for a checkout.

Bingo! Way loose. Must have been so so to start with and then got worse judging by the way shots sprayed as I went on. Thanks for that one!
Now I just have to check it out on the range and see what else might need to be done. :D

Yeah, I had a funny feeling that was the case because it sounded almost exactly like my post when I got my M44. It makes you kinda wonder if the "accuracy issues" everyone talks about with the M44 are a result of people not checking action screws.
