Single shots for big game.

Anyone else like the simplicity and no frills style of single shot hunting rifles like I do? Reliability and price where my two main focus when shopping for a new rifle. Just hoping that it maintains its reliability for years to come,
CVA scout, 450 bush master with a Burris 1.5-4x32 scope.

Congrats on a nice rifle. I think that scope is about perfect for it as well. Single shots are my centre fire rifles of choice as well. I like them for the fact that they are short and generally light (Ruger #1 being an outlier). Over the years, at least while hunting here in Canada, I started out with inexpensive bolt actions, moved to levers, back to bolts, but now only have single shots for centre fires. I’ve owned a Ruger #3 and #1, both in 45-70, and now own a Traditions G3 in 44RM and a Win 1885 Low Wall in 6.5CM. The 1885 is the most graceful, elegant rifle I’ve owned to date and it’s a joy to carry and shoot.
I heartily second your choice of a single shot!

Thanks, it seems well suited for it so far. I think a Win 1885 maybe the next single shot added too my safe. Very nice looking rifles!

I love the bang flop theory but it does not always happen. At long shots 200 yards with my H&R 45/70 I would be running up to said animal and checking to see if it was dying or killed. Slightly disturbing for me.
With my 270 wm I don't run up to look, out to 300 yards.

A good friend in Switzerland has hunted the world with his Blaser K95
We hunted moose and goat together, 3 shots into the bull as fast as any bolt gun
Likely dead after the first at less than 100 but like he says the only way to get fast and good is to practice fast and good
Bullets were a Euro copper iirc, Impala or Oryx maybe? some name like that

I really don't know why I don't hunt with my single shot rifles. For the most part, 99% that is, I kill my big game animal with the first shot. I have beautiful kipplauf and falling block rifles that are begging to be taken hunting. Maybe I'll start this November on my annual whitetail hunt.

I had a #1 in 7RM. Thing of beauty, scratched the stock once, made it all pretty again , sold it and with that money bought a 110 Weather Warrior and a starter reloading kit. The #1 was accurate, my Savage shoots circles around it, hence my handle.

First deer I ever shot when I was a little kid I shot a couple of times. Got cursed out about wasting bullets and wrecking meat. Everything since has been one shot one kill but for years he just wanted talk about my first deer and how I shot it up wasting bullets. Haha they never wanted to talk about what you do right. Anyway for me there is no advantage to multiple shots.
I've hunted with probably ever type of falling block over the years. Love them all.
With a ruger #1 when I was a kid I used to feel like Frederick Selous and my 30-06 was actually a 461 No 1 Gibbs Farquharson.
A magazine rifles big advantage is on horseback. You can leave chamber empty. I don't trust a single shot loaded chamber on a horse and no real good way of keeping a bullet handy without exposing it to moisture or having shells rattling in your pockets.

With original high wall if you keep dropping the block without putting it on half cockt first you will eventually break the firing pin.

About 15 years ago, I was looking for a change. I had been hunting with a Remington 7600 pump, but rearely found myself in a position where I needed a rapid follow up shot. I wasn’t ready to give up hunting a firearm, so started looking at single shot rifles. The more digging that I did, the more that I was drawn to the Browning B78. I ended up buying a used one online from Cabelas in Rapid City South Dakota and had Prophet River import it for me. Since buying it, I’ve bagged several moose and deer with itso I’m quite pleased with my acquisition.

I'd much prefer a traditions g3 or CVA scout. Scope can be mounted alot lower on those than the Henry.
The last couple henry singles I played with had horrible triggers. I've heard the newer ones are better
The trigger is much better. I have one that went through the recall. Still not super light, but mine went from like 7lb to 3.
