Single shots for big game.

Thanks for that. Considering a get-together at our range for guys with mostly straight-wall smokeless/blk powder cartridge rifles, may allow 30-30 348 and such, 45/70 38-55 44-40
for the classic levers and single shots to shoot some steel
won't be bpcr obviously, may have to call it old n' slow cr )
or maybe outlaw cowboy

now back to the program........

Sounds like a good time.

Got a chance to sight in and get some trigger time over the last week, not sure if these 2 groups are bs luck, or this rifle/ammo/scope combo is just that consistent but safe too say I'm digging the new rifle.

First one was a #1 varmint in 22-250, then I acquired another one built as a schuetzen rifle, 32-30Rem, Canjar trigger, then a Browning 1885HW in 22-250 that I built into a 32-40 for schuetzen matches, and another Browning 1885HW in 223, and a Varner Stevens repro .22, and a 044-1/2 Stevens action I had built into a 218Bee at the same time as the 32-40, and a 300Rook in an 1887 H&H rook side/underlever rifle. about 20ish yrs later picked up another 1885HW, new Win label version in 300H&H, and a Merkel K1 in 7RM. Then I went for broke and ordered a Krieghoff SXS in 30R Blaser. I was a good boy , sort of, for a few yrs there, bought a couple of SXS shotguns, 12ga. About 2019 or so, picked up a Ruger #1 again, in 7-08. Still have two 1885's, the 223 & 300H&H, the 044-1/2 in 218Bee, the Merkel and the H&H rook, and the #1 in 7-08 and the K-gun.

My son and I had our drillings out this morning in the fresh snow.
Although they have SxS shotgun barrels up top, we don't use them with slugs so they are essentially single shot rifles 😁
His is a 12x12/ 375 H&H, and mine is a 16x16/ 9.3x72R🙂
His is about 7.6 pounds, mine is a pound lighter.
We have only killed birds so far, he bounced one off a branch tis morning however when he got a shot at a buck LOL

His is a 12x12/ 375 H&H,

Now that is an all around gun...

I love a good single shot, some of my favs I've owned: 500 S&W handi, 303 brit ruger no 1, 8x57 JRS

I have sold a lot of guns, but the first two might be my only real regrets.

Thinking of buying a 243 CVA for a blacktail/range blaster

Must ask on 12/12/375 where about was one of these found. Thought about getting one but interested in 12 and 6.5x55, 3006,9.3x74r but 375 would be a the king

That particular rife was sold on CGN here to another member, who sold it to my son a year or two later.
You will not find one of these every day, it was made by the famed Austrian Johann Fanzoj!
However, there are quite a few very good drillings for sale from Denis at Intersurplus!

I would love to find me a good tight drilling, 16/16, 8x57jrs(irs) would be perfect for up here!!

My Single is a Ruger 1, 303 British and i am a huge Fan.

its nice to carry and point - i keep it open sighted which limits it to a 100m gun really, maybe a tad more but im not hitting gongs at 200 with it thats for sure lol. but it does not need to do so.

with all the hoohaarr about the 303 #1 , i decided to keep it simple - would love a NECG on it but for now the Apoxy clay rear buckhorn is doing wonders ;)

I had a Thompson Center but never warmed up to it and parted ways. I was always intrigued by the Luxus singles but never managed to get my hands on one.

My only single is a Ruger #1 in .303 British and I absolutely love it. I only got it last year and it's been out with me a few times but I haven't managed to get a shot at anything with it just yet. It's gorgeous and fits me as though it were made for me.

Been doing most of my big game hunting with a Tikka T3x stainless in .223 this year but the Ruger has come out a few times as well. Doesn't seem to matter what I'm carrying though. Animals show up. But not the ones that the tags in my pocket would allow me to kill. Such is hunting though. I could have filled up the back of my truck like 3 times over if I could kill mulie does here...sigh...

I've fooled around with a variety of single shot rifles over the years. Some cheap break action rifles that were ... cheap. And I tried hard to like the Ruger #1's but decided they weren't for me after owning several of them and enjoying them for a while. Ended up with a "perfect" single shot. My search is over.

Krieghoff Hubertus with steel frame chambered in .30R Blaser. It is elegant, handy, not too light or too heavy, takes down into a very small compact case, and can be safely carried with a cartridge in the chamber because of the cocking/decock mechanism. The cartridge is very versatile, just between 30-06 and .300 mag performance. Full power loads are very adequate for moose and elk at any reasonable range. Light handloads with H4895 & 150 grain bullets emulate .308 performance and don't kick much, AND groups fall to within 1/2" of the full power RWS 165gr. and 184gr. factory loads at 100 yards. Composite group of all three loads is about 1-1/2". That's something I've never experienced with any other rifle. The rifle fits me perfectly for shooting from field positions. Trigger is exceptionally good, and there is a set trigger option for target shooting. The action is easier to unload with gloves on compared to the tilting block systems used in the Blaser or Haenel. The rail mount Swarovski scope on Recknagel pivot mounts are perfectly matched and completely reliable when detached/attached.

The rifle required no tuning. No fiddling. None. It was perfect from the start. That is so satisfying.
I think the lines and handling of this rifle are beautiful. Like a well bred bird dog, it just wants to get out and hunt.
