Well, which to pick? The SKS is $160, and your choice of either a 91/30 rifle or 1944 carbine for $145.

Which would be more enjoyable as a plinker/ammo burner?

That isn;t a sale - that's the regular price!! The same SKS is cheaper by $20 at Lever Arms, and the Mosin is the same price at P&S Militaria only Jean will handpick a nice one for you and send you pics of the exact rifle in advance to help you decide. I wouldn't get one from SIR unless I could pick it out in person.

I just meant that they were available for sale, not 'on sale'. My mistake. I'm in Wpg so I can pick one out.

Anyway, any thoughts?

Actually you can't really pick one out at SIR, they're all in the back and they'll bring out one or two but it's pretty much take what they give you. At least in my experience.

i second that. SIR most certainly will not let you pick one out for yourself. They send one out and thats what you get. Maybe if you're really lucky they'll let ya have a peek at more than one, but its never happened to me. This is especially important since all thier mosins are different years, including some of the absoloute crap war years ones that look like they were whittled into shape.Even tho they're all re-arsenaled, It would piss me right off if they gave me one of those turds. I'd buy the SKS, I got mine there and it was in nice shape and an absoloute blast to shoot! Plus, they all seem to be in reasonable shape...

my sks-d does absolutely nothing for me...my yugo sks and my VZ's are much more fun. The 91/30 is a hoot, but you cant shoot it long...Get both so you can swap between them when your shoulder starts getting sore...

You can have my 91/30....... I think I'm a recoil wuss.........
Man does that hungarian heavy ball ever kick the #### out of you.......
The Czech stuff wasn't nearly as bad but still gave a good bunt. I chronyd the heavy ball at 2700 FPS, that's a 185g pill out of 7.62x54....that's got to be over pressure......

They're not listed. Any you'd probably be better off getting one from P&S, the first one they gave me was a real p.o.s. hex receiver, and they didn't want to get me another until I told them I didn't want the one the gave me. Even the one I did get had some bluing and pitting issues underneath the handguard. Note: russian refurb bluing-touch up wipes away with hot water and a rag, probably just a marker for all I know. Ollie's sks is pretty nice though, seems to be in good shape. They'd probably be a better bet, though unless you're local you're probably better off going with one of the lever arms ones.

The bang for the buck of an SKS(or anything that takes mil-surp ammo that's as cheap as 7.62x39) is pretty much incomprable fun. I love my mauser to death but almost never shoot it cos its so expensive to shoot. 5 rounds 8x57=5 bucks. 20 rounds 7.62x39 surplus=2.80. I guess that means nothing if moneys not an issue, but if moneys not an issue, why have an SKS?

Ìf you want cheap ammo and lots of fun at the range go for the SKS
If you want a crap milsurp buy the mosin nagant
If you want a good milsurp buy a lee enfield or a mauser

However I probably shouldn't talk considering I just bought a M91/30 sniper
I hope I'm not dissapointed.

If this dosen't do it for me then you'll be hearing about it.

The lever arms SKS's are the same series as mine happydude, they are put together with leftover parts and have serials starting in the 0400### range.

and a mosin is not a crap milsurp :x they are fine milsurps with russian characteristics heh heh... I enjoy firing mine almost second to none, especially with that Hungarian heavy ball!

Cant wait to pick up the carbine i've ordered and have a go with that! prone! speed shooting! yes, its sadistic, but its also FUN

Riflechai, if you wish to be rid of that MN sniper, talk to me first. I'll trade ya something good :D

I went down and looked at the display M-44 a couple weeks ago- very nice. Looks like an arsenal refinish to me- lotsa finsih left on the metal, excellent bore.... I was impressed. The ad in the flier sez something about hand select for the Mosins, so it may be worth checking into.

I've bought several milsurps from SIR over the years, and can offer a little advice. Don't go when they are busy, ie: Friday evg, anytime Saturday, or close to opening of deer season. Show up at opening on a Monday morning.

When I bought my Fr-8 there, they kept bringing them out til I found one with an unsplit stock. They must have brought 6 or 7 out. Same deal when I got my Chilean- they brought 4 out before I was satisfied. The old turk M-38 I got there, I liked the first one they brought out, and bought it :p

The only skunk I got there was a 2 groove No.4 MkI that keyholed everything I fed it.... back in the early 80's....

My only CF rifles are a .30 Remington and a 6.5 Swede, which are both pussycats. I didn't realize the "185g pill out of 7.62x54" from a 10 lb rifle would be such a hammer. I've fired Enfields before and didn't mind them a bit. I shotgun lots and can shoot it all day, but I'm not looking to be beat up by a fun gun.

6.5 Swedish milsurp ammo for plinking seems to be hard to find. Same with .303 Br, unless somebody has a line on a big stash of the stuff. 7.62x39 seems to be cheap as rimfire, so I figured I'd get something that would use it. Otherwise I'd be shooting the Swede or I'd try to find an Enfield.

I'm sure SIR would let me look at a couple of rifles.
