SKS, a beautiful rifle in its original proven form

If it was in good shape I would try. But it's already started cracking and the entire stock is just rough. It'd be more effort than it's worth to try and fix it. If I could find a nice condition Russian stock I wouldn't have an issue swapping that.

A few years ago, I put a Russian Laminate stock on my original Chinese SKS from 1989. The Chu wood was in terrible shape after 15,000+ round as a plinker/truck/bush rifle - Love it!

Best thing that ever happened to my sks was putting a grey timbersmith laminate stock on it and a Hical peep site. The thing is gorgeous now, and I dont care what people say about Tapco mags but they work great in my rifle once you tune them properly. The Grey timbersmith with tapco mags looks deadly and is a lot more comfortable and user friendly lol.

It's never been sanded

That is a perfect stock, truly a snapshot of how it looked from the factory

I've got an SKS thats got a lot of wobble where the action fits over at the front of the stock. Got a piece of cardboard stuffed in there for the meantime to shim it up, but that wont last forever. Any ideas what i should do for a more sturdy fix?

Its ok only if its Russian cardboard. You can get some in the ammo spam cans.

Some bubba had his hands on it (going in too tight syndrome). I have not seen a newly imported one which wobbles, military cares about function, civilians about looks.

.

I'll give you a case of beer for that SKS - hmm second thought, I will give you 2.

I am always suspicious of those new looking SKS. I just did some SKS stocks and did not sand at all. You can get the cosmoline and paint off with oven cleaner and wipe it down. Also that bolt housing looks too shiny to be real.

Having said that, the imports these days, especially the Chinese ones are C grade but I have seen some ####xy Russians too. 10 years ago the quality was so much better.

Some freak show like Justin Trudoh has become our "new normal". The country is hell-bent on getting the full Venezuela experience.

If you don't own an SKS you are crazy.

EDIT: Nobody talks about how great SKS 7.62x39 ammo is? It's usually very old, it's very cheap, the primers are very hard... and for some reason it goes BANG 99.99999998% of the time?

Those who were smart enough to buy those RUSSIAN ''BOXED REFURBS'' fpr under $200 at CABELAS are picking up 550-600 now.
Had 4 fellows who got into a bidding war !!! wish I had bought a crate at LEVER ARMS over in Vancouver now....
even the ''sardine can ammo '' has hit an all time high...........as a side note, in over 14 years of plinking with RUSSIAN (and chinese surplus) ammo, have never had a misfire or slamfire.......I used to clean the carbines after a day out on the range and like changing brakes on the trucks.....simple p.m./ upkeep keeps everything working safely. as was said, If you think a RUSSIAN SKS is poorly made or worse,''JUNK'' you have neither shot one or even held one........

Im honestly happy that SKS rifles are jumping up in price. Maybe once they reach $800+, people will start to respect them more.

How true. The SKS is like a hammer, or a 1911 45acp, it will die before it lets you down.

I remember I was at a gun store and almost got laughed out of the place when I suggested they would be worth a grand or 2 if they were new production guns. I was a newb and it showed... but I wasn't wrong. Ive never had a single failure. I had 3 over the years and thousands of rounds fired. What more can you ask for?
