SKS, a beautiful rifle in its original proven form

We can use the VZ 58s as a good indicator for what a new production SKS would cost. Even then the VZ could cost slightly less since it is milled from castings where as i believe that the SKS is not.

A couple of my oldies...

Remember they don't belong to you anymore . they belong to that mean looking cat now . just like everything else you own .

It's because they were / are cheap, if its cheap it must be junk. :)
This!
The actual value of a SKS is so much higher. I bought mine for 250 from Lever Arms years ago. I would have been impossible to replace it with anything else of the same quality and capabilities for double what I paid. I’ve been waiting for a nicer 180 based rifle to come out however I’d be all over a modernized and accurized SKS

Here is my Chinese SKS with the stock I refinished. The wood looks stunning in the right light. Still never fired after all these years. I didn’t want to get it dirty. Lol!

Love the SKS. Only have 7. What are you guys thinking of the Fab Defense stock? Kind of on the fence. Jimbo14, show us some markings on that beauty! As mentioned before, my Chinese ones have a better trigger than the Russian but we will work on that, lol.

You have to buy more SKS and find out which one are the best shooters, it varies a lot.

Just as a comparison, I pulled out a virtually brand new Mossberg Tactical pump gun. The front sight tapped the side of my locker door as I pulled it out and fell off!! It cost me twice what I paid for my SKS (and I paid alot for it in 2012 dollars). You can own modern junk or a real working gun that will protect your a$$ in a SHTF scenario. Just sayin'

When Mossberg 590s were first issued to our American friends in uniform it was not unheard of a slight bump in especially cold weather, parts would detach themselves from the barrel.
Never would happen with M37 or Wingmaster.

My 'old' 51-Tula, sold in a moment of weakness. :( Barska scope/recvr mount held zero after proper fitment. ;) And my New '51 Tula, bought a few months later. No scope - yet . . . bolt mod and ej-port mod, bayo now in a box. Both rifles shot about 4-5 MOA with irons.

Load your own ammo and be surprised what a SKS will shoot like.

The Chinese are for function, the Russians are for looks. Chinese are better shooters as well. You have to put work into the Chinese to look good and work into the Russians to function as well as the Chinese. I am talking military Chinese, not commercial.

I just bought another Russian and amazed how beautiful it is and how crappy it works, lol. Oh well, we shall figure it out.

I have had good shooters and bad shooters from each. More often than not, if you actually inspect before buying, you will find the Russians are better in all regards. The Chinese all found new homes in my case. With the bottom-of-the-barrel crap currently for sale, it's even more imperative to inspect before you buy.

Hi,
After getting over how much I dislike the SKS safety, I went ahead and bought an SKS from a fellow here on the EE. I went for it because the pics showed a beautiful rifle - a refinished laminate stock, and an immaculate barrel. It's a 1952 Tula. And I love it.

The rifle is a good shooter (average 1" groups at 50 yards - 2-3" at 100 yards), with a rear peep sight.

There is some combination of factors that for me, make the SKS stand out as a handy (great!) rifle to have. I think it's a nice looking rifle in the laminate, it is rugged, easy to maintain, reasonably accurate at shorter ranges (haven't tried beyond 100 yards), and the ammo is relatively inexpensive - even the Barnaul HP or FMJ that I normally use.

I can shoot it for a good two hour session, spend maybe $50 on ammo, not have a sore shoulder, and walk away without having developed a flinch.

If I could change anything about it? Very little. I wish the mags were not pinned to 5 (not an SKS fault!), and I'd like it if the bayonet could detach like on an M1.

And after all is said and done, Rifle is fine! As long as you add a rear peep sight.

Cheers,
Neil
