SKS at the range

As someone who removed the front site assembly complete and watch the groupings shrink to nearly half the size... I call bs.

That bayonet jars around so much when folded it destroys the consistancy of the barrel harmonics. Its why firing with it locked out generally net better groups.

And i can verify the groupings a i have real site and mount lol

Though you have a real sight, you used the worst mounting method for your scope available to the sks platform. The dust cover mount is horrible and not very stable. Use a wartak rail for best results, or get the scout mount to replace your now useless rear irons.

Shooting with the bayonet "locked out" if anything increases the weight by the leverage effect. Weight on the end of the barrel is a good thing, removing the weight ( bayonet ) is a bad thing. :) None of my bayonets jar around.
Does your SKS barrel still have a bayonet lug ? It looks like you cut it off.

Why ask, if you noticed it doesn't? He did say that he removed the front sight assembly. Which also includes the bayonet lug.

But makes it harder to play lawn darts without the bayonet.

A scout mount would work better than a wartak rail, with a scout mount he could still use stripper clips, not sure about the optic though... I feel sorry for that poor SKS.

I think that is actually one of the side mounts that D&T’s into the receiver. If so, it’s the most accurate mount there is for the SKS.

Hi,
Just a quick range report from this morning. I was using the SKS with aperture sights, from a bench with bag support, at 50 yards, Barnaul 123gr HP.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the results, although there's quite a bit of the shooting mechanics for me to work on.

You can see the groups here (from left to right):

1) 5 shots. It think the vertical stringing was me - I had a hard time seeing the exact center of the target.
2) 3 shots.
3) 5 shots. Again, the vertical stringing was probably my fault.

Cheers,
Neil

Ready to move out to 100 I'd say!

Anyone have any luck floating their sks barrel?? :stirthepot2:

Exactly :) That's another reason why a barrel mounted optic is by far the best system for an SKS, it make little or no difference whether the barrel is floated or not.

+1 on what Pinky said.
The mount used was the Crazy Ivan drill and tap. The way the mount
was engineered it cannot move up, down or front to rear
when removed or replaced. It retains zero ...

i can free float my sks barrel by removing 2 bolts. I plan to try it in the coming weeks... not sure what the accuracy outcome will be. But im very interested to find out.
