It's not in my hands yet, but it should be here in a week or two.

Thanks again Dave. Hard to express gratitude through PMs and emails, but I think it looks great and is definitely something cool to set my SKS apart from others.

nice job neit.

the albanian carrier is pretty rare, i tried getting one for 3 years, after i gave up then i got a PM asking me if i wanted one . :dancingbanana:

I must say, looking at the job they did I would hesitate to purchase one of their products.

On the underside of the charging handle someone didn't put in enough weld/material to be able clean it up nicely, so now it's all patchy. Gross. Someone there said... oh that's good enough...

I realize it's on the underside of the charging handle but for someone like me with OCD it would drive me nuts.

It also looke like they had to grind the impingement face and clean that up. Makes me think they did the weld with flux-cored wire instead of a gas method like TIG or MIG. If you look at the before pic, the lines are much crisper. The after pics make the underside surfaces look less crisp, almost the melted look.

The guy who did the work is no machinist or welder - I guarantee it.

It's probably functional though, if not elegantly executed.

Again though, I'm not sure why anyone would bother? It doesn;t improve operation one bit, does it?

There was a lot of filling to do on that handle, and I was pretty surprised to find that the metal was a quite porous as well, which led to a lot of small pin holes to fill.

It was a PITA to do... the shaping was easy, but the filling and grinding to blend lines was pretty tedious. My TIG was down which left me with filling with 3/16 sticks.. not ideal at all. Like Claven2 said.. I'm no machinist, just try to do the best with the tools at hand. Since I've never done a handle mod to a SKS this one was done pro-bono from the start.

In the end as long as the customer is happy I'm happy. I'd gladly take it back in the shop once the TIG is replaced to clean it up though.

MIG will fill those pits just fine. I would pre-heat the handle with a torch first though, cold welding with a MIG will add too much material and make your filing job that much more difficult.

I would avoid flux-core wire for that job though, it will spatter and leave dross all over the place.

Surprised to hear the carrier was porous on the inside. These are military parts - one would think the manufacture standard would be better. I wonder if the Russian ones are more consistent or not?

Was it a chicom SKS? if so dont be surprised. Its for reasons like this that groups like the TSA and their nuclear counterpart that will not allow Chinese metals to be used in components made in China where the end customer is in NA or EU. Metals for those fields have to be imported from North America or Europe.

Yep, chinese sks. As mentioned, I wonder if a russian bolt would be the same.

Thanks for the mig tips Claven2, I'll let my friend know.
