Hello,

Hoping for some help completing the stock change on my SKS. I originally posted my question in the gunsmithing forum, but it was suggested to ask here instead.

Here is the post:

TLDR: I have a Russian SKS (1945), I've purchased an ATI Monte Carlo stock, the bottom change went no problem, but I can't get the ferrule pin out of the handguard. I've read that it might need to be drilled out and replaced, Lever Arms (where I purchased it from) also believes this is the case.

Should I order a proper SKS replacement pin, or can you get something from the local hardware store (as has been suggested)

Thanks.

if memory serves me correctly the pins do have a one way in one way out direction! i believe that they have to be driven out, left to right! but being as that pin is so easy to fabricate using the right sized nail, and a dremmel, it would realy matter! hell ive had an old beat up norinco i bought at a pawn shop here in the us about 3 yeasr ago for $70 bucks that didnt even have that pin in it, and guess what it still went bag every time i pulled the trigger! sure i replaced it with a peice of galvanized nail, but its not realy that big of an issue, and if anything, it would make the upper handguard that much easier to remove, and install lol!!!!!

Ive been using the piece of galvanized nail that came in my SKS-D when I bought it, a roll pin or piece of welding rod would work just as well. As for getting it out, if kickassnikov47 is right then one end should be a larger diameter than the other. If thats the case then drive it out with a punch from the smaller end, pushing the larger end out. You can use a block of wood as a backing piece, you will be able to drive the pin into the wood, then use pliers or the punch to drive it all the way out

As best I can tell, my pin is non removable, neither side looks different, and as I said, I've beat the tar out of it, and it won't move.

The store I got it from is pretty sure the versions they sell need to be drilled out.

I'll try again, and then its drilling time!

Thanks for the suggestions on replacement pins.

Will let you know the results.

I have a Norinco sks based on a serial number dating post i believe was made in the 1960's which I changed out for a Tapco stock. I had to drill out the pin as no amount of beating the tar out of it had any effect. Best of luck to you- that part of changing the stock was a royal pain. As far as I know there isn't any way of getting around drilling it out- I believe that tapco at one point was selling the entire upper unit but not sure about ATI.

Well, it didn't need drilling out, just a proper punch tool.

Not that you all haven't seen 1000 of these, but here is my SKS with the original furniture and the new ATI Monte Carlo Stock.

Not all that impressed with the fit and finish of the stock overall, nor the fact it doesn't have a cutout for the bayonet, so I might have to take the dremel too it.

Here is a close up of how the fit and finish just isn't tight. Where the bottom of the stock butts up, big gap.

It will do for now!

Since when can you have norcs in the states?

We had to drill out the original pin then used a finishing nail cut slightly longer then a hammer and anvil (2 hammers will work) to mushroom the ends . A little filing to get perfect length and your done. A buddy who is a gunsmith/armourer and a machinist explained it just like that and it has worked on 5 sks replacment stocks so far. Good luck the first one was the worst.

Hey dn604 is your barrel parkerized or is it just because of the photo? If it is parkerized did it come like that, did you get it done or did you do it yourself?

It does look and feel slightly parkerized, but it wasn't advertised as such when I bought it.

Where did you buy your sks from? Did you have to modify your monte carlo stock to fit the bayonet? I have the chinese and the spike bayonet is about one inch from the front of the magazine when folded underneath the foreend. Did you see any monte carlos with the cut for a spike bayonet?

I've never had to drill one out - just find a way to support the area around the pin and drive it out.

I got it from Marstar.

The Monte Carlo's don't have the cut out, for my blade I think I'll take a dremel to it and try and make it work.

The spike would be more challenging and I would suggest you get a stock with the proper cut.

and you would be correct , the US imported so many chinese SKS before than ban that we will never come close to that figure even 10 years from now.
I use to visit guns shows stateside before the import ban and let me tell you. I'd see hundreds of them at gun shows and stores in racks and crates going for $99 a pop. The amount of them was staggering!

What really caught my eye was the new, silenced, full-auto, collapsible stock H&K MP-5's I'd see go for $2,000!! All you need is a $200 transfer fee and it's yours the man said. I could only dream about it. :(

itll come out, you just need to beat its ass a little. i spent 20 minutes and mangled the tip of a cheap punch getting mine out, even soaked it in penetrating oil for a while but it eventually came out.

You will notice that with the proper punch and vice/bench block, once imovabale pins will suddenly move. Using nails and wobbly tables will generally yield poor results with tough pins, screws, etc.

Sure does, I posted completed pics above.

Thanks.
