SKS confession

From my experience the steel core doesn't penetrate any more than the steel core. If the bullet manages to breach a hard target the steel core does usually shoot out the other side, where as a lead core is reduced to jacket shrapnel & molten lead.

I was under the impression that steel core FMJ is essentially AP ammo and therefore illegal? Don't quote me, I could be wrong.

In any case, I've never seen steel core FMJ, just lead core stuff. Desporterizer summed it up nicely. Incidentally, the jacket will look like an empty toothpaste tube and there will be little bits of melted lead dispersed throughout the barrier/target. If you wanna see it yourself, build a water-box like the box 'o truth guys did.

Is AP ammo illegal here in Kanuckistan? :confused:
Never heard that before. I have seen some AP .303 cartridges at gunshows.

Btw nice last post poweredbybeer.:rolleyes: :p :D
Topics on SKS's are like Pringles...yah can't stop at one posting. :D

Oh hell damn fart! I forgot about that last post thing!! ####! :redface:

You're right though, any post with the word SKS in it is like crack cocaine around here :p

You're right, AP ammo is not illegal, I looked it up (like I shoulda done in the first place before opening my big yap) :rolleyes: I wonder if there are any surplus crates of AP floating around in 7.62x39 or 7.62x54R? Not that I'm planning on piercing any armor in the near future :p

Sir Sks

I am not highly motivated to own one...but for the price.
Anyone have it?

Is it one of the 'good' ones.

Chinese SKS Type 56 Semi-Automatic Rifle

Back by popular demand, these surplus rifles feature 5 shot top feed magazine with hinged floor plate. 20” barrel with folding bayonet. Very Good condition. Produced in China. 7.62 X 39mm Caliber.

Cat. No. 410050

Price: $ 159.99

I would hardly qualify steel core as AP. The steel core is just a mild soft steel core that allows the Soviet M43 round to retain a large bullet size without excessive weight. In tests I did with copperwash steel core Norinco ammo and steel plates against a 257 Roberts with HP rounds, the 257 blew through the steel plates and the backing plate while the vaunted (at least in the USA) Norinco copperwashed steel core ammo merely dimpled the plates. This was done at 55 meters... That mild steel wire core does nothing for AP capabilities.

I went to the range yesterday and there was a fellow there blasting off shots with his chinese SKS, he had a Conventional choate stock and I must admit it looked rather appealing.

so today I ordered one from lever arms. 150$, you can't go wrong:) :D ;) :p :cool:

where is the cheapest place to get a Conventional choate stock?

Interesting, I "accidently" perforated somebodies 3/8" steel plates with my friends SKS at 50m

IN the immortal words "only accurate rifles are interesting".

So that makes the SKS not that interesting.

And even more immortal words are "You can't buy good skills"...
ie ones rifle is only as good as the rifleman holding it regardless of how much one my have paid for it. :D

I'm not s'posed to give advice that contradicts Canadian or US import/export law, so I'm not allowed to tell you to look on eBay or anything like that. I haven't looked on eBay, so I know there isn't a Choate monte carlo stock on there right now for $45 US ;) Take that as you will.

Honestly, I think the Butler Creek monte carlo stock looks better than the Choate monte carlo. I've got a Butler Creek on my SKS right now, and I'm very impressed with it, required absolutely no fitting and feels great :D I've read/heard that the Choate stock is a bit flimsy-feeling in comparison, can't say for sure since I've never touched one myself. Here's a pic of the BC stock for comparison;

The ATI monte carlo stock looks even cooler, here are two examples;

Choate is a good company though, don't get me wrong. If you like it, shop around a bit and I'm sure you'll be able to get your hands on one for a helluva lot less than $150 :D Hope that helps!

Yeah its not like I need steel core ammo. Theres nobody and not really any bullet proof vests in Canada that could with withstand regular FMJ or HP 7.62x39 anyhow. Not that I'm going to try...well maybe i'll shoot some steel plates. Thanks for info guys.

Russian vs. Norc

Some say yes and some say no...I'm suspecting that it is more of a marketing thing. Folks on this board could prob' tell yah:

Keep in mind they Can't get the Norincos in due to the USA ban on the Chinese Arms, so they may be considered "forbidden fruit" by some down there. :D
