Is it worth it to buy the SKS-D model for the thirty round clips or should I just go with a normal one?

I just want something cheap and cool to shoot, under $300...any other suggestions would be appreciated...rifle or shotgun, no hanguns please!

I was thinking about maybe a Mossberg 18.5" pistol grip shottie or an SKS but I cant decide which one...If I could put in the thiry rounders I would go with the SKS but I just found out I must buy the 'D' model for $400 do do so...#### that, for that money or just a bit more I am buying a M305

Well you're only going to be able to put 5 rounds in the 30 round magazine anyways...

But I guess if you think they look cooler/like the idea of detachable magazines then go for it?

The anal retentive types will tell you that only 5 rounds are allowed in any centerfire semi-auto (except the garand). and that the clip is supposed to be called a magazine. I saw an SKS model D at a gunshow for 220.00 bucks last year. The other option is to buy a regular SKS and adapt it to take AK mags. The reciever opening for the mag well has to be opened up a few thou to accept the mags though.

How hard is that to do?

The D is a pig. ITs hard to do quick mag changes. You might be happier with a regular SKS

i dont know if the Ds are available for $220 this year but at leverarms they have one D for $399 and they also have plenty of regular sks for $149, i didnt have to think long which one to buy, i bot the regular.

The SKS is great, you dont need a D. The only major problem with them is that they have a very short stock built for Maoist Midgets. I use to have an East German one along time ago. Wood was nice. Yugo ones are nice to. I dont like Orange plastic wood chineese ones.

Um, I must have a different SKS D, then.

How hard is that to do (convert regular SKS to use AK mags)
I's not as simple as opening up the reciever. You must modify the reciever to fit them. You must cut a a lip for the front the magazines to interface with. You must construct a make catch. Finally, you must modify the bolt to work with the AK magzines. After all this work I doubt it would function properly.

You'd be further a head jerking off into the wind.

I like my D and yes, I can change the mag pretty fast. Why get a D over a regular model? Well, if ever you find yourself in an "end of the world, zombies are taking over" scenario where the regulations don't apply anymore, you can pop the rivet out and have a lot more fire power. Five mags of 30 will get you from A to B much easier then five clips of five.

Of course, that is all a very big "if" so don't go broke trying to prepare for it.

you must, I have a couple of friends with a few Ds, The mags are real pain to rock into place. If anythign the shorties go in better than the large ones. I like the SKS alot, but stripper clips are much much faster for reloading. Did you have to do anywork on yours to free up the mags abit?

like sask said it's a real pain in the butt to modify the sks to mag fed but it can be done. Get an after market stock like the choate dragunov and use stripper clips would be my suggestion.

Hey you got any serious advice on why my buddies Ds are so tough with the mags? The one in particular is a real pain. He never shoots it anymore because of this. The mags are in good shape. I understand that the longer ones allow more leverage but in this case the fit is horrible. Mags are just standard grey painted ones. Nothing special. He has several 30s and several small ones.

Is your buddy maybe trying to put in CZ mags? If that's not the case, tell him to take a mag that works well and compare the heads by closly inspecting them.

My mags didn't fit perfect when I first got them and I had to file them down a bit. I based the modification on the one mag that worked smooth. When I was done, they were locking in perfectly and easily and the filling down also took care of some minor feeding problems. They now work amazingly well and are really get in and out.

Some people find it hard because of the different technic required when compared to the AR-15s.

I was considering getting a D model before I picked up my regular one but decided that for the extra $250 it wasn't even close to worth it seeing as the only difference is basically the look. I suppose if you were going to go to the trouble of scoping it (which is a whole different issue) the D model would be better as you wouldn't have to worry about the scope getting in the way and inhibiting your ablility to use stripper clips.

Sort of, but the ejecting steel cases would still beat your scope to crap. :D

Seeing as you're on the sks forum, I don't think anyone here is going to NOT recommend the sks as something cheap and cool to shoot. And, they're tons of fun to mod.

I haven't had trouble with my SKS-D in the two years I've had it. They only problems are with the cheap 5rnd mags that often have too long a follower in them to hold 5 reliably.

They are fun to use and abuse and the only reason I don't use mine much anymore is because I got a CZ858

Well I converted my Russian SKS to detachable mags and a new style stock. Also installed a shell deflector and a beefy scopemount, it's no M1A but makes it a lot more fun when shooting out a couple hundred yards. Changing mags is a pain, but you can't use stripper clips with a scope. Remember all my mods are reversible but damn these old Russian SKS's shoot nice!
