Is this rifle worth the money versus a cz-858? Which is most cost effective? and what is a reasonable price for a used/new sks-D? I'm unsure of which to get. Does the sks-D have problems with ak47 magazines as a normal sks has with crapco mags?

The SKS-D will be worth whatever you and the buyer agree on, they sold for $159 back in the 90's so he's gonna bend you over and make you uncomfortable on the price. The short mags suck balls for inserting, longer mags are ok. Its still an SKS and just cant compete with the 858 in terms of weight, balance, ergonomics, magazine fit/ease of mag changes, sights, aftermarket parts etc. If you really want one then its worth whatever you gotta pay to get one which can be $350 or could be $700 with no regard to condition or included accessories. If cost is a concern I'd go with a type 45/56 SKS, if fun, look-cool-factor and a better handling/more accurate rifle are more your thing then go with the 858.

I have an sks-d all matching, only has 20 non corrosive rounds on it, pretty much as new as one can get. Looks and feels a lot closer to an ak than that toy 858. Is it just me or was the 858 designed for very petit women?

I used to own a sks-d and in my opinion it is just another sks. I sold it and used the money to buy an cz 858 and I haven't regretted my decision one bit.

Very true. From what I've hear I'm likely going to end up purchasing a cz-858. However, how much of a difference is the chrome bore going to be?

I think that is more a question of the type of shooter you are and what your preferences are? In the end though I wouldn't be worried of an 858 and it's non-chrome bore. If you are shooting so much that you wear it out, the gun itself won't owe you anything for the $700ish price tag. Now if you don't clean your guns regularly, live in a humid environment and use corrosive ammo then maybe you need a chrome bore more than others.

And the SKS-D is designed for idiots that will pay too much for an SKS...

I do plan on cleaning after each shooting session and I do not live in a terribly humid environment either. It's difficult to say,I've handled the sks before and don't mind the weight. Have yet to handle a cz858 as of yet, but that will change Saturday. Is either of the two easier to clean with corrosive?

Bought an SKS-D back in the day because in the pre-VZ58 days it was the closest thing to an AK we could get. Once the VZ came on the market my SKS was dumped as quick as I could get it gone, IMHO theres no comparison. The VZ is a proven and in use military platform, the SKS-D never saw military service (not that it matters when shooting paper at a range but still...). 7 years later still have that VZ (CZH-2003 Sport) and love it as much as the day I bought it :D

i got an sks d and sks m, both take ak mags, and both run flawlessly i have no problems running and gunning with either and both were way cheaper than 858

Yea, cause looking & feeling like an AK is all that matters.

I've never understood the appeal of AK mags on a SKS. Maybe if you're one of the fortunate few Canadians to have AKs in your collection, and you want to your mags to be interchangable. Aesthetics-wise, the standard military SKS is great as it is. IMO, buying an SKS-D is like overpaying for a 4-cylinder Mustang just because it has chrome rims.

But if a person wants a better rifle, buy a better file. Don't waste money trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

I own a Norinco SKS (not the D model, just a milsup Type 56) and an 858. I can honestly say that I would not want a huge AK mag sticking out of the bottom of my SKS. Sure, you can get 5 round mags for them, but what's the point? Why not just get a Chinese or Russian for about 200 bucks then and have 5 rounds in the pinned mag?

If it's what floats your boat, don't let anyone talk you down, but if you want an AK looking rifle, go for the 858, in my opinion.

cleaning the non-chrome barrel will take a little longer especially with dirty ammo. That being said the rest of the 858 is quicker and easier to clean than an SKS. I still prefer cleaning the non-chrome 858 over a chrome-lined SKS. Dont be concerned with barrel life, X39 is not hard on barrels and with 5 rd mags they just dont see as much abuse. The only thing to consider is cleaning and oiling it to avoid rust. The gas system and action parts are very corrosion resistant vs. the SKS which has a chromed bore and piston head, everything else is bare steel.
