SKS field stripping 101,corrosive ammo cleaning, lubrication *updated*

Thank you for this great thead, I'm a new sks owner and it sure has help al lot getting all the sks ducks in a row.

So that's what all that crap is for that comes with the sks ... I actually have 4 or 5 of those cleaning kits and rods from the skss I've had in the past.. Sure looks easier than using the big long rod I use for my bolt guns.. Thanks for the lesson

Great post, thanks for sharing!
I just got a 54 Tula, and used boiling hot water to remove all cosmoline in a matter of minutes! Stripped the rifle, put all the parts in a rubbermade container. added 1/4 bottle of (Awesome). Its the best all purpose degreaser hands down, and you can find it at any Dollar Tree! Yes, for a BUCK$
Give it a try!

Thanks so much! Just completely disassembled and cleaned my 1st SKS for the first time today. With this tutorial It was a breeze! I found the hot soapy water worked great for getting all the cosmoline off.

Thanks svt1940! Great detailed instructions and pictures. Easy to follow and really helped me breakdown my sks first time around :)

I just used this sticky to take all the cosmo off my first sks. This made it really easy and quick. I used brake cleaner and it really works. But I always use my bore snake, quick work of the barrel.

Thanks alot for this post!!

Outstanding tutorial Joce, greatly appreciated. I have a question for you I haven't seen answered anywhere yet. The three little pouches and sling that that came with my rifle smell strongly of cosmoline. Any tips on getting the stink out? Also wondering about the little double necked can that came with it, why two openings? And what was in it?

I think you could wash the sling and the pouches in very hot soapy water and let them dry, pretty sure they wouldn't get hurt. The little can have 2 compartiment, 1 for bore solvent of some sort, 1 for oil.

On my son's 26 Chinese SKS the gas tube will not come off.Must the rest of the gun be stripped down prior or should the gas tube come off by rotating the release lever?

The lever has a tab and I used a bullet tip to open it to the correct position.Don't want to scratch things up.
