The Russian SKS have marking under the gas tube and on the side of the rifle 's receiver , people refer these makings as Motto rifles.
These are comming out of Russia and not the Ukraine like before , the seem to be completely coso free , also packed in card board boxes unlike before they came in wood crates dripping with como..

From Cabela's complete takedown is a good idea and visual inspection recommended. I bought 1 rifle from Cabela's and looked at 12 or so before I found one acceptable. Don't be afraid to take the top cover off and also inspect the gad tube. If they complain ask if you can return the gun. If they say no then c9ntinue tearing down rifles.

Depends, if you want another SKS or not. It would be cheaper to replace the spring than the postage. You can see, the barrel is 10/10 condition. I would check if all s/n match,
see if the gas piston is not rusty( sometimes is hard to pull the gas tube out) and check all the components and then make a decision.

Could you post a better pick of the sock. The stock almost looks nitro lacquered instead of shellaced. Those import marks have been around for a while. Canadian Tire has them all of the time. Personally I prefer the non import marks

My advice would be to return it if possible, then buy from a milsurp dealer with SKS experience. I have a lot of experience with the Chinese Type 56 and they were always shipped cosmolined. Dealers clean some and put them out in the display cases and replenish when necessary. I don't have any experience with the Russian SKS, but, if they're like the 56 they vary in quality by varying degrees from gun to gun. Look for matching numbers (rare), bright chrome bbl, pitting, rust, colour variance, etc..., and remember you have right to inspect until you find what you want. Cabela's just doesn't have time or expertise to deal with the level of scrutiny required.

Yea that would be a North Sylva SKS. They're the ####tiest quality SKS you can get your hands on. I've seen them with chambers badly rotten to the point where the gun wouldn't feed, trigger guards seized in, stocks cracked and repaired with a piece of wood with the grain going the opposite direction. They're just ####ty SKS. Id never buy one and Cabela's advertised that garbage as super grade. If you want super grade SKS, hand select one yourself from Westrifles web site.

North Sylva never cleaned these of cosmoline as they were never in cosmoline to begin with., They are the rougher condition lend/lease returns from South America that were returned to Russia within the last few years, were "refurbished" ( but not to the quality that they were back in the day decades ago.) and then just before the sanctions against Russia went into effect they were sold to Germany and from there to North Sylva. They have grit in them for whatever reason, but given a thorough cleaning will actually function and run rather smoothly once cleaned. Because after refurb they were not oiled well they have some rust. Mostly on the trigger group springs and butt plates. Many times you can buff up the trigger springs and they will function fine. If the spring should break down the road just get a set of Wolff Spring set. If they won't take it back do what I have suggested and you should be fine. I have run into more than a few of these and all but one of the rusted trigger springs cleaned up fine and functioned no problem. Try to return it but if you can't you have options.

No, you have the right to not buy what you're presented. You do not have the right to inspect every SKS in the stores inventory. Guns stores make $0 - $20 profit from the SKS. They're the Nachos of the gun industry. Meant to bring people in and order beer with or in the SKS case, accessories. If you come in only wanting to buy an SKS, you won't have any power to ask them to show you more SKS. If you show the store you're about to buy snap caps, gun case, trigger lock, ammo, cleaning equipment, shooting rests, targets, they will be more willing to show you an extra gun or two. But when its just off a single item that makes them 0 profit, they will want to spend as little time as possible with you.

That is the case most of the time, I have one CTC that would bring out a few at a time,, if they have time and another where I actually help them label and date the whole bunch when they come in,( up to 140.at a time) and I get to look them over. If you get to know the guys/girls at the LGS they are more to let you pick through. Best thing for us to do about the crappy sks from North Sylva is not buy them, I pick through and find one or two out of 50, but for someone coming in to buy one sks, maybe the best thing is a sponsor or lever arms, not sure what theirs are like but I don't think they come from NS.

I picked one up online from cabelas when they had their sale back in the fall.
Mine had some rust on the trigger assembly itself, underside of the gas tube, and most spots where metal and the ill fitting stock met up... eg. Front end of the foregrip.
Not the prettiest gal, but it operates flawlessly. Even though I had zero expectations of anything remotely collectible or matching, I was still pretty disappointed when I first cracked the box open.

Completely untrue. If that were the case major distributors and chains wouldn't bother with them. On the contrary these and the surplus ammo accompanying are the bread and butter, not the crumbs. CLP, rods, and cases are the crumbs. So, inspect what's out on the shelf, as is your right, (not the warehouse as implied) and buy what you want.
