SKS from Cabelas, rustry trigger group

Guns stores make $0 - $20 profit from the SKS.

Wow , so when they go on sale they are selling bellow cost ....................

Some stores sell a russian SKS for $279.99 ,,, so the store buys them form the importer for $259.99 ............... just to make 20 bucks ??

Yes in most cases when they go on sale they get put on for cost price or even sometimes below cost. It's the importers that make money off the SKS not the store front retailers.

When buying sks bring a little flashlight, ask them if you can open the dust cover and look at the internals. Take the guts out, decock the hammer and look down that disconnector hole, you can inspect the hammer spring before you buy it.

wow ......... just don't understand " WHY " a retailer would lose money selling SKS .

Example a true retailer ,,, sale price NOW $219.99 ,,,,, was $269.99 a week ago $ 209.99 ............ so a week ago he is losing $40.00 a rifle ,,, this week he is losing $20.00 a rifle ,, assuming he makes max $20.00 per SKS at full price .

Looks like a good way to go out of business , don't forget he gotta pay people , lights , insurance , alarm systems , heating , taxes , rent ....................... If I was him selling at a loss plus the time wasted better find something else to sell .

Laugh2. They make their faces on the stuff no worries there.

most make the money on the ammo, there is almost no margin on a firearm unless they are the ones that do the imports. everyone that touches the gun tries to make a small amount. so if the importer is selling at 259, there is no way the retailer is making alot. they will make more money selling the new rifle the ammo needed. consider the SKS's a loss leader.

OK , I guess you are all correct that most retailers lose money on SKS ,, even on the poorer quality they are now bringing in . it will be interesting to see how much a UN marked SKS sells that is imported in to Canada after 1 June 2017 .................

Not sure about the SKS specifically , but lots of retailers have loss leaders . They will advertise and sell items below their cost in order to bring customers into their stores in hopes that they will become return customers . It is all part of their marketing plan , and they budget for loss leaders as part of their advertising and marketing budget .

No, you have the right to not buy what you're presented. You do not have the right to inspect every SKS in the stores inventory. Guns stores make $0 - $20 profit from the SKS. They're the Nachos of the gun industry. Meant to bring people in and order beer with or in the SKS case, accessories. If you come in only wanting to buy an SKS, you won't have any power to ask them to show you more SKS. If you show the store you're about to buy snap caps, gun case, trigger lock, ammo, cleaning equipment, shooting rests, targets, they will be more willing to show you an extra gun or two. But when its just off a single item that makes them 0 profit, they will want to spend as little time as possible with you.

I didn't realize the lackadaisical, non chalant P/T gun counter staff worked on commission at Cabela's. Crunching numbers and determining profit margins while serving each customer. How do they not get distracted by the looming smell of fudge while demonstrating such discrimination on behalf of the multi million company they work a whole 2 days a week for?

Still a fair price for a robust milsurp battle rifle ^^^^.

It only appears high because we've been spoiled for so long.

I'd be curious about the polished ones. Are they coated afterward? You can polish steel for sure and it will be shiny as hell - it's one of the steps in the chroming process. However polished steel will rust. Quickly.

Cannon.

Cabelas will take it back if it's rust and not cosmoline. I have seen a few on posts and what not. It polishes right up. No pit marks or anything else that is rusty.
It's also coming to the end of the line for sks imports so the grade will drop as the "cream of the crop" have already been picked.
A little cleaner and a nylon brush and it should clean right up. If it's pitted then its rusty.

They don't work on any kind of commission so how is that point valid?? Any firearms sold don't have to much mark up. That's the firearms business. Usually less than 25%. All the extras like cases ammo, etc. are where the mark up lies. But taking the time to sell the right firearm to the person, and get them to come back, building relations is how to make sure that's where the money is spent. The extra add-one like ammo cases and kits. I've always called it planting seeds. Even if they go elsewhere they may always come back.

It took forever but Cabelas finaly refunded the SKS rifle.

I placed my order at Westrifle, for what appears to be a good condition 'blued' (as far as I can tell), SKS 1954. I'm going to receive it soon.
