SKS Honor Match

Results

ok, 1st how do you measure????

Here are my convoluted results...
The blue dots are one group, the other shots are from another... I swear.

The green dots were my 2nd group and best except for the flyer high-left...

Note, I fired my 5 shots marked them with blue dots. Then fired 5 more, marked green, then 5 rapid fire after adjusting my front sight (shots were hitting low) = the unmarked sloppy group.

The coffee can lid was wedged between the target backing and wood support in the very top left of the target, hence all the visible low-misses on the paper. I couldn't see my hits 'cause I don't have a damn spotting scope... I thought the lid would fly off on the 1st hit, so I got pissed when I thought I wasn't hitting it and unleashed on it with the Garand too  - But, my blue & green dots were already marked so those two groups are confirmed. I told you my results we convoluted!

All from 100 Yds. Someone already posted pics of the range: St-Jacques http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=119623 (it was too cold to bring the camera anywyas).
Ammo is 123 gr FMJ South African PMP surplus
SKS is totally stock except for the Choate "dragunov" stock. Factory 626 - from Milarm.

Group size is measured from the centre to the centre of the farthest shots in the group.

Your blue dotted group would be approximately 5.8", I measured it against a B-27 I have here.

Well mine does not really count because the distance was only 57 yards LOL I could not even see my target at 100 yards. Now that I see C9ers target, mine looks like a postage stamp  but it was all I had, but now I realize 10 in. by 10 in. is to dang small, especially for my eyes. So here is the pic of the 5 shots I actually managed to get out of my SKS. Ammo was the same as C9er's. also was windy but not to cold.

Thanks Craig. I will confirm your estimate tonight.
Nice shooting heavy. were you shooting from a rest? or another position?

I will try and get out again and post a proper result.

Yup, for the easiest measuring, just measure from the outside of the furthest hole to one side to the inside of the furthest hole on the other extreme; this gives the same measurement as center to center but provides more concise points to measure from.

Good on ya for shooting boys, now as the originator of the thread, I'll have to get on it. ;)

Was from a rest, but like I said was only at 57 yards not 100yrds. After seeing your targets...I WANT SOME ..where you purchase those???

I bought them at the St-Jacques range, a twoney each. They're big... but hard to spot your hits at 100 yds

lol really....for fun I tried 4 shots at only 50 yards and 3 of the shots grouped less than a half inch from each other all on the rim of the bull, I figured that was pretty good . I also shot them all wearing a full face mask I brought from work lol just in case.

Kewl C9er, I'm going to pick some up of those targets, hopefully soon I will have another SKS to try it on.

Not enough target posting on this so I'll throw mine in for humour .
The culprit : Chinese SKS , modified Dragonov stock , Williams fire sights bedded and screwed together . Round count @ 3500 :dancingbanana:
sks004.jpg

The results : two groups of five fired at @ 109 yards . This was the better of the two , but not by much =7 7/8" 5 round group . Ammo was silver box Norinco . Fired from a bench . Weather was cold , wet and windy ( thats why I only tried one ammo on two targets ) .
sks001.jpg

I think this rifle is on the way out , it used to group a little better than this . I noticed alot of the casings are split , some quite badly . I miked out a few spent casings and an unfired round , I don't know how much they are suposed to expand but mine are growing ..28 to .33mm in the neck and .24 to .28mm in the body . Yet the length seems basically unchanged . An unfired round seems really sloppy in the chamber as well .
sks002.jpg

Some of my excuses maybe my crappy eyes , I recently got new glasses and I'm questioning if they are correct .
I also believe that for 100 yard plus ranges the fire sights don't help . They give a quicker sight picture which has its benefits but the apature is a little big plus the aren't that rigid on the gun .
I think another SKS is in order with an optic , Probably some new eyes too .
:dancingbanana: :dancingbanana:

Heavybullet , I've had many tight groups in various SKS at 50 -60 yards but they seem to really open up at further ranges , plus many SKS seem to have one or two fliers per five round string . The gun definately excells at closer ranges . I always amazes me how much damage this gun can do to targets / backstops compared to smaller nato rounds .

I agree RUPZUK, not enough results!
Gotta love that Norc ammo! 3500 rds eh? Mine is at about 2400 I figure...1200 norc silver box 1200 south african PMP.

Post those results boys!

Honor Match 3.25 inch 100 yards

Here's the rifle cheap norinco open sights on my parka it was 0 degrees.

Close up of target

Measures 3.25 Inches

Close up of another target unfortunately measures 5 inches but has 1.25 3 round cluster

Shooting at a page of typing paper with open sights so I am just guessing where the center of target is. Ammunition Chec surplus. Its the restigouche range I forgot to bring my camera to take a picture of the range.

The weather has been the pits but I finally was able to get out today! I took my newest (to me) SKS which I had only fired 30 rounds out of previously, some czech ammo, and a backpack to use as a rest. Most of my groups were the standard 4.5 - 6 inch size. Then I remembered someone mentioning about extending the bayonet , so I stuck it out and noticed two things:
1) My POI shifted about 7"
2) My groups got smaller

This is a representative group size...

AND THEN I FIRED THIS GROUP! Yes it was at 101m and it just barely made it onto the paper...was I ever glad to see the grease mark at the bottom!
The group measures 2 1/4" :)

I will post a pic of my SKS after I finish cleaning it.

A buddy of mine has an SKS arriving from Frontier taxidermy today (hopefully) and we are planning to go out again Christmas eve :) I'll take my other SKS then. Finally, I have to say I had a blast, get out there and have some fun!

Cheers

RUPZUK: Your rifle looks like it has excessive headspace. Case splitting is a bad sign, soon they will be separating and thats when things can get ugly. I would stop shooting the rifle until you can get it checked out. If it was bought from lever arms and the serial number starts with 040 you should send it back for a replacement (there is a known problem with that series of SKS rifles).
