Happy New Year All :D I plan on getting a SKS in the next couple weeks and have a couple questions I haven't been able to find the answer to. First what is the LOP of a regular SKS ??? I suspect they weren't like the British with 3 different lengths. Second question I have is the unusual colour of the Russian Birch that most rifles have. They seem to be reddish along with darker areas. Is this the wood it self or the finish they put on it. It almost seems to be a Camo job, but I can't see them spending any more time on them than necessary. What does the stock look like after it has been stripped and refinished with say Tung Oil ??? Thanks, Jack

Happy new year to you as well, the reddish colour is the goop crap they dip them in i think, I have stripped all of mine and it is actually nice wood underneath in my opinion and according to my pull and drop gauge they measure out at around 14"

the wood on mine came out really nicely after the cosmo removal.

tagged for interest- I'm not a huge fan of the trigger myself, I'd like to adjust if possible.

I've baked my wood (non-laminate) stock twice (each for about 3 hrs each, turning and wiping every 1/2 hr) and it's still weeping cosmoline. The darker spots are getting lighter in some areas, but, I still think it's got a lot of cosmo left in it; since when I pick her up, it still feels slightly greasy.

The finish is a red tinted shellac.

"The Kurgan" redid his laminate, by stripping and using tung oil. Here is a link to his thread-- w ww.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6569084#post6569084

I was trying to take the cosmo off my Russky, but I seemed to have steamed the hand guard and got a milky finish (which was resolved with rubbing alcohol). Here is the thread on that--including some pics; and yes, I suck at taking pictures --w ww.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=686521

Not sure how to measure lop, so I measured from the rear of the trigger guard, at the centre. To the bottom of butt plate is 12", to the centre of the butt plate is 11 7/8" and the top is 12 1/4"

I just measured the chu wood stock on a Chinese SKS (without the action) at 12 inches. I have measured a couple of Russian ones in the past and none was more than 13 inches.

Can anyone recommend a brand of slip on butt pad that will give me a couple more inches on the LOP and fit semi decently?

Thanks for the replies. About 13" isn't really uncommon then. The longest rifle I have is 13 3/4" that's a Parker Hale. Maybe the Chinese rifles are a bit shorter than normal. I wouldn't bother with a slip on pad. I had one for my hunting rifle that I used for pre hunting range shooting and it ripped. Not to mention looking Mickey Mouse. I think a dealer here "hical.ca" sells a couple different recoil pads that are 2" long. Much better and likely the same price.

On a chinese military sks, a medium slip on Limbsaver fits well. It will add 1", taking you from 12" to 13". before slipping on the pad, I made a 1/2" spacer and screwed it on using the screws that hold on the stock one. That gave me a nice 13.5", which works very well with the scope.
