SKS magazine release ... looking for your opinions

We are in the process of making an extended mag release for the SKS.

Everything is ready to go, it is now just a matter of deciding what material to use. Choices are stainless steel, carbon steel with a nitride finish or aluminum. I estimate that the steel parts will retail at between $40 and $50 while aluminum will be about $30.

CGNers please offer up your opinions ...
 
I will need to see what the design look like , I fear the aluminum might break if made too thin .
 
The one I saw in the US was blued steel and basically just a stock release with the finger latch extended to the trigger guard. It worked well, you just put your trigger finger forward and pulled back, no real pressure required. I like blued steel, thats why I own the rifle, ruggedly built.

It will not be thin, but I think it is too early to show pics of the design.

Aluminum will tend to get dented with abuse but I wouldn't be worried about outright breakage.

The question is whether a price point of $50 would be too high for you to buy if it is a steel part.
 
Honestly either is to expensive just given the cost of the rifle purchase. Its not like we are talking about a mag release for $1000 hunting rifle here.

I just purchased a SKS to learn to shoot rifle and use as a bullet hose for plinking because it fires the cheapest ammo around. I intend to spend 0 dollars on it other than oil and cleaning patches. But I know there are some tactical guys out there who love to spend more modding there SKS than the purchase price, you just need to figure out what percentage of the market is like them and what percentage is like me to see if you can make some money off this :)
 
LOL, this thread isn't really intended to act as a "gripe magnet".

We all know what the SKS costs and it is a great value.

I would prefer to hear from those that tend to buy accessories for their SKS. The question I am asking is about material preference and resulting cost, not the cost per se and how its not for you because "my rifle only cost this much".

And to get back on topic ... I think 6061 is every bit as good as 7075 for this particular application. If I recall correctly, the 7075 requirement referred to corrosion resistance in humid climates and not strength of the material itself. I expect we will choose 6061 if we use aluminum.

In that case steel, if I was going to spend $30 on a aluminum one I would for sure cough up the extra cash for a steel one, just my opinion.
 
I think it's to costly.
I have a plastic Tapco one that I have used for about a year and it holds up well. For ten bucks it was worth it.
 
What ever material that will make it as tough as the original should be sufficient...

LOL... "gripe magnet thread".. They should have a sub-forum on CGN, called "The Whambulance"
 
6061 would be strong enough but it is a notable amount weaker. 7075 is stonger and not very corrosion resistant. 6061 is fairly strong and decent corrosion resistance.

But anyway... I think I'd buy an aluminum one over a steel one even at the same price. It'd be interesting if you could get different coating options on it. I love how anodized aluminum looks.

Sounds as if you got a good deal on that. I have seen them on sale locally at double the price.

That being said, the Tapco mag release is quite short as compared to what else is available. Our version will reach almost to the trigger guard and will minimize the effort needed to release the magazine.
