Hey Bacon-S
Your idea may work, would hold tight I guess, but makes cleaning a chore. Check out sksboards.c om and search for that mod you described. Someone had posted a thread about doing that. There are lots of other mods there to improve the SKS. But you need to at least flush the barrel and guts with Windex (with ammonia) to counteract the corrosive primer salts, then lots of oil. Brushing to get out fouling helps lots too.

Search 'Vote for David' for more tips, too.
I had the 'Combo' set-up from Cabelas (http s://www.cabelas.ca/product/9101 ) and made it work by 'bending the ears' of the receiver cover. Put one ear in a vise and gently but firmly bend so the side rails fit snugly in the receiver rails. (pic below) The cover that comes with the set also has 'see-thru' below the scope to use irons. I had to file-open the pic-rail to move the scope back a bit and could just barely use the strippers. The 3-9 is plenty for the SKS. I had to put on cheek rest to raise up to see scope properly but the set held zero well. I had a 51 Tula (matching except mag) and could do about 3-4" at 100 yds. That's about the best you can expect w/o major gunsmithing mods. I painted the front sight pin and pin cover and rear sight face with white appliance touch-up, then covered that with yellow hi-liter! Really visible in most light.
I had done the sear 'trim & polish', light sear spring from MCarbo, 'super-polished' all the internal sear rails. that got the trigger down to about 5-6 pounds -I kept original hammer spring since I shot mostly milsurp. I also put a bit of adhesive felt pad on the trigger guard to stop over-travel - it also kept me from getting my finger pinched there after firing!!
Squaring off the ejection port (pic below) changes ejection-direction to close to 3-0'clock instead of 12-1 o'clock and then drilling some small holes in the gas tube to 'shorten' ejection distance by reducing pressure on the action. Those mods (from sksboards) kept empties within 8-10 feet to my right instead of 20-30 feet. Made range clean-up much easier

I had some posts about my mods under user = Fasteddie01 , but I sold the SKS back in spring so don't go there often.
Update: I bought a '51 Tula in Tapco in early Aug-2020. Did the sear polish, and ejection port (compare angle of pic 2 & 3) mods and lube sear/hammer and rails w/synth grease.
good luck with your mods,
Buck
