Hey man, sorry for delay ... damn netflix!

I just took the black one out today... I got it yesterday :) ... It is SO much fun!! The grip is different, that is for sure... but using in prone position with a bipod... it is perfect.

The end of the barrel has some sort of rubberized shrink wrap on it... it is tough, but I may change it up down the road

yeah... as you can see I keep a stock one around as well... but I encourage you not to be a ''red rifle snob'' ;) ... I just got the ''bubba'd'' one yesterday and had it out today. It was, without question, the most fun I have had with an SKS ... instead of just popping at targets off the shoulder and just flying through the ammo (nothin wrong with that btw :)) ... but to line up targets way out there with a 30 cal, centre fire, semi auto, that's ammo cost about $0.20 a round and smack em ... is well ... fun as hell!!!

Or just shoot ammo that is not lacquer coated. The chrome lined bore is a non-issue for those of us that can clean our rifles after shooting corrosive in them.

If that is your plan then get the vz58. It is a much better rifle at that price point. Hanging a pile of Tapco crap on an SKS will not turn it into a vz58.

I have both. The sks was fun until I bought a cz858. The overall feel and balance of the gun as well as the location of the safety and the trigger pull makes it a pleasure to shoot.

The sks has value in that it is a russian/chinese surplus gun, but the cz blows it away in every area that counts.

Dunno about the vz. Have read a lot of bad threads about the vz in 223. If you get one you should try to get a 7.62
 
hunt for a good deal on both and enjoy them for different reasons, thats what i did :)

they both offer you something different and for the $200.00 down the road pick up an sks
 
Just wondering why you want detachable mags? For ease of reloading? Maybe you have a belt or jacket to hold a number of mags to use?

With my Tapco'd Norinco I have a Tapco 20/5 mag that basically stays in the rifle all the time. I just load with stripper clips. I could just buy more mags (I own 2) or detach and reload the mag, but clips are faster than that.

I also haven't experienced and issues with quality or performance with my 20/5 mags.
 
umm VZ 58 and CZ 858 also load with stripper clips......any way my VZ 58's get most of the range time but my SKS is a treat to bring out and it is a perfect SHTF rifle of corse my VZ's would be as well, i like the idea of having as many of my firearms sharing the same caliber as i can......in short own both an SKS will not break into your funding so much that you cant afford the VZ/CZ........my recommendation is the VZ over a CZ because of warranty and finish, just my 2 pennies not saying one is better than the other
 
You need to get both. The VZ58 is the superior rifle of course in every way. The SKS is better for plinking because it's so cheap it doesn't wear out your beloved VZ58. I like my VZ58 to shoot myself, but if I'm bringing some newbies to plink in the woods, I wouldn't want them to "learn" on my VZ58 - they can use the SKS.

I don't want to be disappointed in the feel of a rifle just to save a few hundred bucks.
I do want an sks, but i have my go-to plinker right now.maybe ill pick one up when i buy a crate of ammo in the new year!
I've decided to definitely go big.
Wtb vz58 in 7.62!

You made the right decision. The SKS is pretty sh!tty in terms of finish and is heavy. I would not in any way find it pleasurable to shoot or own. SKS is purely a bush-whacking crown-land plinker IMO.

The VZ58 is the 7.62x39 non restricted AR - you can have just as much fun tacticooling it as an AR. Check out the VZ58 pics link at the top of the Red Rifles forum to see what people have done to theirs. I would rate it equivalent to an AR overall - there are things that the AR does better, and there are things that the VZ does better - and both are current service rifles. The SKS on the other hand is just not on the same level and there's a reason why no current army uses the SKS. People who compare the SKS with a VZ are smoking the fan-boy joint.

before i beginned with an sks because i was listening what the othey where saying but i finally bought the vz later in the summer ^^ the same year , the sks is front heavy and it a little pain it you want removable magasine , My cz is still my favorite , i like the sks , the mecanic but not the entire look , that why im still working on a prototype stock

the sks is cheaper for sure you can always begin with it and buy a cz or csa after they share the same cartridge

You mention you don't even own an sks ... So ... where does your knowledge come from?

I have owned both ... I found the sks to be the far more reliable firearm ... now if we had no mag restriction laws ... I may still own the CZ ... But we do have mag restriction laws so there is no point.

What did I say about the SKS? I said the finish is rubbish and it is heavy - both true. Do I need to own it to know that, or perhaps I can ascertain that knowledge through.. I don't know.. handling it in a store? The VZ 58 on the other hand has a finish that is comparable to modern black rifles and is as modular as other black rifles, hence pleasurable to own and shoot. Nobody needs a semi "assault rifle" - these things are just for sport, so we might as well enjoy the aesthetics of it, instead of being tortured with a WW2 looking Russian gun.

...and you just sold your CZ right? Is the VZ your #1 now?
 
I don't own VZ 58 and I also think about purchasing it however I went to store and asked to handle it. Somehow it feels cheap, cheap plastic :(. CZ 858 has better finish in my opinion but the "gremlin" and prices on EE are deal killers.

O.k, I do agree with some of what you said. Sks vs vz is apples to watermelons...

Butthe vz58 is not even close to an AR-15 in fact it is closer to an SKS.
 
Bad finish? You haven't seen my collection! Not to dis the VZ or even the AR, but there is nothing more reliable and simple to maintain than a proper functioning SKS. There are some pretty rough refurbs out there, coupled with the fact that they're over 60 years old that most people shoot low grade surplus fodder through-- level the playing field and you might be surprized.
