I got to the range again on Wednesday and brought along the sks and a shooting buddy brought his No4 303. I shot 10 rounds out of the sks at 50 yards. I then shot 10 rounds out my buds 303 No4, I got better groups with his handloaded 303 ammo than I did with the factory sks stuff.
I tried again and got the same results. All the sks guys I shoot with say the sks is supposed to be more accurate. What did I do wrong for the 303 to get better results, especially when I have never shot his 303 before. What did I do wrong to get better groups with his gun than my own??
I will have to rethink things......
 
SKS more accurate than a 303 Brit? ROFL.... that's a good one. :)

Every 303 British I've ever owned (and I've owned a few) could shoot sub-2 inch groups at 100 meters with Winchester grey-box factory ammo (some of them way less than 2 inches). Handloads with Sierra 180's usually improve on that performance. If you get an old 303 that's seen too much abuse, yeah, it probably won't shoot -- but by and large, a Enfield 303 British in serviceable shape should be capable of grouping under 2 inches at 100 meters with anything vaguely resembling decent ammunition.

On the other hand -- I have to ask... has anyone EVER (personally) seen/shot an SKS that would group (consistently/every time) under 2 inches at 100 meters, with ANY ammo? Such a thing probably exists, but such is certainly not the norm.

That doesn't make the SKS a bad gun, mind you -- I like them a lot, and am probably picking up a 1954+ manufacture russian in the near future... but... more accurate than an Enfield... probably not... :)

and all the remington guys say remington, the ruger guys say ruger, the enfield guys say enfield... notice a pattern?

so can you tell us what brand "factory" SKS ammo is? and what type of SKS you own?
 
Generally I guess my enfield will outshoot my SKS's with any ammo, but I did try reloading for my Norc SKS and got some really good groups but because of the softer commercial primers I got the occasional slam fire. So no more reloads for the SKS's unless I can find Milspec primers and try again. A good handloader will usually get better groups then factory ammo as long as he knows what he is doing.

He is shooting hand loaded ammunition. Hand loading ammunition gives control over so many variables - The bullet weight/type, how the case is formed/sized, how the primer pocket is prepped, powder type/burn rate, ammount of powder to attain optimum muzzle velocity, bullet seating depth - All the quality ingriedients assembled, lovingly custom tailored to the rifle in question. Tested, refined and tested again until the perfect combination is found...

You are shooting Milsurp ammunition manufactured in lots of MILLIONS consisting of a bullet/casing(laquered steel LOL)/powder charge/primer sourced by the lowest bidder and assembled by crappy Communist machines under the "supervision" of a night shift worker who wouldn't know what to do IF he found a problem on the assembly line.

The SKS is a great plinker, ammo is cheap and the pointy thing on the end is handy for poking stuff or opening things which require prying to open. There's a reason it was never seriously developed as a sniper rifle. :p

better idea... buy a 50yr old 30/30 hunting rifle of unknown oragin for around $200, get the cheapest hunting ammo you can lay your hands on then take it to the range and see if it will out shoot a random out of the crate SKS...

a model 94 or 336 will probably surprise you on how accurate a lever action really is. the 30-30 as a cartridge has no flies on it and can be extremely accurate in the right vehicle.
 
My enfield was more accurate at 100 yards then my sks at 50. Not only is the enfield better but a bolt action is usually more accurate that most semi guns. Also an old enfield is certainly no slouch despite its age, I have an old mauser model 98 guys at the range look down on since she is a bit old and rough and the bolt has alot of play when fully opened, and then I shoot a group that raises the eyebrows.

Well first of all what factory ammo are you talking about ?
New production or surplus?
If surplus then what year it was produced?
You gotta relize that not all surplus is the same! How was it stored?
With 303 you probably got new ammo and I am sure it would be better!

There's a fella I see at the gravel pit where we shoot who has the fugliest rusty Turk you ever saw and can shoot the necks off MT beer bottles @ 100 all day long. Love the Mauser.
