Sks Refinish Project

I think ive got how im gonna clean and lube figured out now. I ask about the roll pins because is there a kind that can be removed over and over for cleaning purposes? without going crazy with a punch!!
Im refinishing the stock and handguard and dont know if the handguard should be taken off while routine cleaning so that I can use boiling water on the gas tube! I dont want to ruin the finish!

Also, after the final coat of tung oil should i be protecting the wood with anything so that water, cleaning solvents, lube etc doesnt screw the finish up?? Anyone who knows first hand and can offer advice?

Where can I find slip 2000 or an equivalent water based solvent and roll(spring) pins for the upper handguard?

Also what do you all lube/grease ur sks's with? Would just having remignton gun oil work or is a thick grease for the rails suggested as well?

I used a piece of brazing rod (1/8th inch diameter) that I ground down a bit so it fits in the hole.
Works nicely and easy to remove for future cleaning.:)

By all means feel free to post pics!! and thanks for the advice. I didnt know if leaving the last coat without wiping would leave you with an uneven finish which was my concern!

Leaving it on did not give my finish any uneven spots....( remember coat it and leave it alone, dont touch it ...)
These pics do not do it justice, I know yours is not laminate....but you will get the point.

Thanx hunterinthewoods for saving me the time of typing.
Rock Out w/ Ur Glock Out Remeber always to wipe in the direction of the grain of the wood & use a rag instead of a brush. ;)

Good to know about the rag! thanks guys. And my two are laminate so thats the look im going for when all said and done! :) ive been working so 2moro im steaming out the minor imperfections, sanding to my likings and laying on coat #1 !!

About those rags: NEVER toss oil-soaked rags in the trash. Always leave them out - FLAT - to dry. When hard and crispy, toss in the trash. The reason is this type of oil can spontaneously ignite if crumpled up so you always lay the rags out flat to dry.

Good luck!

Would you guys/girls suggest try to steam out tiny little nicks or just larger dents. Like the only imperfections that I can find on this 51' are barely visible unless you're scanning it up close. Idk if a steamer will even take things that small out and if it wont then I dont want to bother!

Just remove ones that really annoy you. I didn't remove all the dents in mine since some of those add "character". It sounds like you should just leave them alone based on what you wrote. :)
