So my wife wants a scope for her SKS, we had the receiver mount, which was crap. Has anyone tried the one for the gas tube or one that replaces the rear sight?

And if so, do the ejected casings hit the scope?

browse through the SKS optics sticky, tons of great info in there. The gas tube mounts are a poor design that may hold zero for a short time but will quickly come loose. The SKS scout scope mount and BC Tactical scout mount are both very solid designs each with pros and cons. The Choate mount that DIllIGAF suggested is made specifically for the SKS and is very solid. It is your best bet for using magnified optics while the BC Tactical and scout scope mounts are excellent for red dot sights.

I bought this, but without the scope rings.
I had problem fitting it so I needed to shave certain edges to fit in. Once that was done when I took it to the range, I used the red dot 1x 42mm. I found it problematic, because this forces the scope to sit on higher elevation and does not have a forward lean to compensate for 0-200m shooting range. I could be wrong.

I am happy with the BC Tactical scout mount for a Bushnell TRS25 Red dot mount. A small amount of dremeling and it is solid.

I have the SKS Scout with a red dot and it's ok. But that mount isn't cheap; an option if you don't want to drill and tap the receiver.

The choate is probably the final answer to the scope mount question. SKSman out of the US is a supplier and I have had great dealings with him( use the phone and speak slowly!). Curtton, a mod on here, is a wizard with backyard tools and helped me install the choate in an afternoon(stickie up top of page). It works great but you may find you have to make an additional mount "slot" for your scope ring thru bolt to fit the shortish rail to the scope profile. Next, if you wish, you have to find a small enough scope to not interfere with the stripper clip guide. A shell deflector is needed or the casings will bounce off your longer scope( ejector modification may be available). Make sure to Locktite(red) the mount/rifle screws in place. Cheers

Well I'll have a smith do whatever we choose, but she definitely wants a variable power. The Choate does seem the best bet.

If you are having a gunsmith install a mount or doing it yourself consider the Weaver Converta mount. I find that the Weaver mount has more positives over the Choates mount and yes I have both mounts. Don't get me wrong the Choates mount is good but comes second compared to a Weaver mount in my opinion. See the following link post #25

i have a scout mount and red dot sight on one of mine i like it, for my other one im gonna order a rail system from lever arms, it has three or four rails on it and wraps around the gas tube and bottom, it looks solid so i think just might try it and put a scope on it
