I was cleaning up and polishing up my SKS the other day and I was wondering about the serial numbers on the front of the bolt carrier. I left them faintly visible when I got done polishing the bolt carrier with 600 grit paper and steel wool, just in case, but are you allowed to polish them off completely? There's a serial number on the bolt and the side of the rifle, after all, so are the federales going to get their knickers in a twist if I finish polishing off the visible one on the front of the bolt carrier? My other firearms only have one serial number on the side of the action, isn't that all that's needed, or do these milsurp rifles need to have a serial number on all their parts, lol? Just don't want to polish the number off the bolt carrier and have some cop/game warden give me a ticket or anything...answers??

Some firearms don't have serial numbers to begin with. As I understand the government sends a sticker with a random serial number they assign to it that you apply to the firearm. Some folks just take the number the government sent and they have it stamped on the firearm to get rid of the ugly sticker.

So if you grind down your number, you can just re-stamp the same number on it. Hopefully someone chimes in with more experience.

You only need the serial number on the rifle receiver(or action if you prefer),all others parts of the sks dont need the number except to keep the rifle matching for collection purpose.:)
Cheers, Jocelyn

Avalonthas, my point is that my SKS HAS a serial number on the side of the action AND on the bolt AND on the bolt carrier...someone was having a jolly time with their engraver, lol! I'm just asking if I can polish off the one on the bolt carrier which is a visible part without getting any flack from the boys in blue? The serial number will still be on the action and the bolt, after all!

:) Thanks Jocelyn, that's what I would've thought, but since this SKS is my first milsurp rifle I wanted to make sure it was okay before I polished the serial off my bolt carrier. Thanks again and have a great day!

The receiver is considered the "firearm" and the only part that requires the serial no. to be visible. All the rest are considered just parts and could be replaced/exchanged during repairs/modifications. So in short you don't need the numbers on any of those.
