SKS Thoughts?

i just picked up a sks as a cheap fun shooter. I did think about taking it all tactical change the stock etc. 2 things changed my mind one it cost way more than I paid for the rifle and two my wife said nooo dont change it, it looks way better with the wood stock. so i have come to terms and accept it the way it is and will have the intended fun.

Thanks for all the info guys.

The reason for the purchase is for something that shoots cheap ammunition reasonably well.

I'm going to pick one up a Simonov later today.

Cheers.

Good to hear, you will not reget it. Take all the different opinions ,sort through them and make your own choices. Do not let anybody tell you that you are a bubba or you are ruining a piece of history. Christ...there are millions of these rifles out there.

I think if you want to bubba an SKS then do it,,,I dont see how someone says you know nothing about guns if you put some tactical accessories on one,,,that's bs.
I have two SKS rifles one stock the other pimped out,,,they both have their ups and downs,,,but don't listen to what others say,,do what you want to YOUR rifles. I love my Tapco T6 and my cheap ass optics...For about 450 bucks I think I have a pretty sweet setup!!

My own opinion is that the SKS isn't a high tech sniper/assault rifle, so why spend more money on bling than you originally paid for it? I see a lot of guys fiddling with and cursing at their scopes on their "tacti-cool" SKS's at the range, whereas I just shoot either of my 2 Tulas and score good groups with iron sights, and enjoy having fun with this cheap, reliable weapon. (You can't change a sow's ear into a silk purse.):nest:

The SKS iron sights can be a bit of a challenge for people with over 50 eyesight. I changed the front sight post from the stock one which is .067 to a .045 smaller post. The sight picture really opens up. I was really happy with my consistent groups at 100 and 200 meters. I still wanted to find a decent scope and mount combination that worked for me. I believe I have found it. Once again, make changes to your SKS that work for you. There are changes that really enhance the performance of the SKS.

I picked up the Simonov SKS - it's from the Izhevsk Arsenal. I confirmed earlier today that Shooting Sports in Gormley has some 7.62x39 surplus left so I'm going to pick up a couple of boxes.

I'll post pics shortly!

You know what would be cool...
If you could replace the rear sight and put a rail there instead.
I mean just a rail just the length of the rear sight no bigger. Also nothing complex like the scout mount. Just something that key's into that slot. It would be nice for a fast fire or some sort of a small cheap little red dot like it.
What do you guys think about that?
Any interest?

thats really good advice. thanks.

i dont know what # my eyesight is, but i really have trouble with the sks irons. i have had other people complain about it too.

Looks like a nice refurb Ishevsk. Of course its a hardwood stock with a laminate handguard, I swear the refurb techs ensure every laminate stock comes with a hardwood hand guard, and vice versa

Happy shooting!

I recently picked up one of those Chinese SKS rifles and a case of ammo from Trade Ex. (Great deal and very friendly bunch by the way!) Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to clean it and head out to a range yet but I did notice one thing with it. I was under the impression that only a sling and oil bottle (as it turned out it was a metal one like the one above) came with it. A stripper clip was included but there was one of those cleaning kits in the stock also. I was pleasantly surprised because I though that the Chinese rifles did not include those, just Russian ones. Could somebody straighten that out for me? It's just that when I look at pictures and descriptions in different advertisements the Russian ones come with more stuff and there is no mention of the cleaning kit with the Chinese ones. Maybe I was wrong to assume this.

Russian and Chinese ones should both come with the cleaning kit in the butt stock.
