I've got a 1950 Tula that will shoot 3-4 inch groups all day at 100m. I believe it is accurate as it was well cared for and no chrome lined barrel.

Dealers have sold out of “unissued” SKS rifles at over $450 in some cases already. Tenda is one example.

BBQ and refurbs will climb slower but true unissued and matching rifles will only head one way. They have already dried up and aren’t available in Ukraine or Russia in any significant quantities... they really are scraping the bottom of the barrels.

Keep your non refurbs and if you don’t have one buy one soon.

For those who say “it’s a surplus used gun and shouldn’t be that high”... here is why you are mistaken.

It’s a collectible, Cold War era rifle that they aren’t making more of. It shoots cheap ammo, it is very useful as a hunting rifle, truck gun, bush rifle, plinker, etc. Plus they look epic, and their legal status won’t change imo.

Plus, there's the fact that for many of these guns, to buy a modern-made rifle with similar robustness, you're looking at maybe a thousand bucks.

Want a tough-as-nails semi-auto centrefire with proven reliability? What else can you get for under a grand? Only equivalent under $500 is Jamomatic remingtons. You can get used BARs in the $700 range. Everything else is going to be $1000, even used Minis are going for that now.

SKS might not be a tackdriver, but you can purchase anything you want to hunt with it, and if it falls off your quad on the way to the deerstand, who cares? It'll still work.

My brother in law suffers from what I call hillbilly chic inlaws. They love their high end guns and so on, but never actually hunt with them, same as they love their dirt bikes but don't actually woods ride, and love their quads but don't actually work them ... but I digress. Anyway, he just sold his SKS to me because like them, he "would never hunt with it." Well, I probably won't anytime soon either, but if I had to get rid of all my rifles, it'd be a good chance it would be the last to go, because I know It Will Always Work. If he wants to bet his hunting future on his Savage Axis with scope that literally falls apart every time at the range, well good for him.
 
I've had dinners with my wife that cost more than an SKS

I have 3 boys, id like to give each of them one and have at least one left over for myself.

I have 2 and will likely buy more if the right deal shows up.
The one in tapco i kinda regret as it was overpriced but the kids love it.

At low $200's they are still a steal
when they to $500 i wont sell mine but i wont buy more

I agree.

All things considered do people really expect a rifle that cost much more in the 1950’s to produce than it does today to stay dirt cheap?

Buy em now, stack em deep ;)
 
I picked one up from Cabella's this past weekend (Chinese) $200 and it is in perfect condition. Took it to the range today and works like a dream. I fully expected to get a piece of crap but will probably order another one if they're still on sale. Regular price is $230.
 
SKS is a fun, powerful center fire rifle and MANY of us have gotten one as our first range toy simply because they were so inexpensive.

Personally, they are under rated. Work with it a litte, and you find out they are actually very accurate even with that consistent, yet dirty surplus ammo. They shoot straight, they are over engineered, over built and perfect for the zombie apocalypse.

Keep em, enjoy em, share them with your friends.

Couldn't agree more. If you have a bunch, sure, sell some. I would personally keep the pristine ones. A working firearm with a caliber > .22 generally doesn't sell for less than $250. So the likelihood of it going down in value is low. So hold on or sell now but most of all, enjoy them. They are solid rifles with cheap ammo.
